Baby Stockton #2 Countdown - 39 Down, 1 to Go!

So, I reached week 39 this past Friday in terms of time, and I'm right on target in fundal measurement. I am still at 3-1/2 pounds up from pre-pregnancy weight. We'll see what the final tally is on my son's birthday. Only gained 12 lbs. total with my daughter.

Just a reminder, I have a "guessing game" online for folks to guess the length, weight, and actual birthday of our son. We will be awarding prizes (books, a $25 gift card, and something else) to the top 3 with the closest guesses. So, get in there and have fun. :)

Now, we're at week 39.5, so here is the update:

Ok, so I DID tease my doctor and his assistant this past Friday about my previous appointment. But that was only because I arrived a little before 11am for an 11:15 appointment, only to not be called back until 11:45! This was after watching 6 other women get called back, 3 of whom arrived AFTER I did. The assistant came up to me and apologized personally when the 7th patient was called then led to another doctor. She said my doctor wanted to see me himself, and they were only waiting on an open room.

It seems the other women my doctor sees are higher-maintenance, have more questions, or just take longer during their appointments. Either that, or it had something to do with it being April Fool's. Sort of like there being a full moon. :) I don't know. But it was nice having one short appointment during my prenatal visits. I usually spend far more time waiting than I do in the actual patient room...unless I'm scheduled for an ultrasound.

Anyway, the doctor did finally arrive, asked how I was feeling and if I had any questions for him (which I usually don't) then told me everything's looking great. Numbers-wise, I'm right on target, and it all looks favorable for a natural birth. The other stats in measurement are as follows:

Dilated to 3 cm
Effaced at 75%
Baby weight estimate at 7-3/4 pounds
Baby's heartbeat was 138
My blood pressure and weight are looking good, no issues
Overall weight gain is 3-1/2 pounds

Some women traditionally go early, being fortunate enough to have their babies before their due dates. My daughter was 10 days late (although according to my calculations, just 3 days late), and my son isn't showing signs of wanting to leave his little cocoon early. Just my luck, right? Looks like it's time for some spicy foods and bumpy roads!

I joked with my mom the other day that I have obedient children in the womb. When I went into labor with my daughter 2 years ago, it was April 1st, and I told her she couldn't be an April Fool's baby. So, she waited a full 24 hours just to make sure! With my son this time around, I told him he had to wait until after his sister's 2nd birthday...which he did. Then, one of my acrylic tops on my nails chipped today, so I told him he has to wait until Thursday after my nail appointment. Something tells me he will. (sigh)

So, I'm still waiting for the signal, and I'm praying it's just a matter of time before this entire situation gets rollin'!

While I'm in this antsy pre-birth limbo monitoring all my symptoms and feeling the size of an international airport, I'm trying to take some time to reflect on the world into which my highly sensitive, helpless and vulnerable infant will be born. Since we're all stocked up on diapers (because we'll be changing them 8-10 times a day in the first months), blankets, and onesies, we've finished the easy part. And some ladies from my Bible study came to finish the kids' rooms with decorations, putting away the clothes, as well as general set-up. The rooms are adorable.

Now, have I started thinking about my relationship with my newest family member? Somewhat. I'm feeling a combination of anxiousness to be done coupled with nervousness over handling 2 kids (a toddler and an infant) and a full-time career at home, along with continuing to be a strong homemake and wife. Praying my husband continues to share the load and split the duties as much as time allows for him. I do know I have help from several ladies, including one who will do some shopping for me, and another who will be coming every Friday just to spell me a bit. That, plus 3 weeks of meals delivered should help the transition go smoothly until I'm comfortable balancing it all.

One can hope, right? :)

And here are some words from the rocket baby inside me:

Yeah, life isn't changing much in here. Still cramped, still finding it hard to get comfortable, and still hearing that yelling big sister of mine out there. At least it's not all the time, and yesterday, there was mama's singing that soothed me quite a bit. I can hardly wait to be on the other side and hear it without all this cushioning that's muffling the sound. I'm sure it's going to be just as soothing.

I gotta tell you though, when that other doctor did that pushing a few days ago, I was NOT a happy camper in here. Shoving me this way and that and pushing on my head. It wasn't exactly the most pleasant feeling in the world. I can only imagine how it felt to Mama. At least she can move around more and stretch out. But I look forward to when I can snuggle in her arms and see her face-to-face.

Until then, I'll just keep getting ready for my first birthday and try not to hurt Mama too much.

It's me again. The mama. :) That's it for now. Tune in each week for the latest...although this might just be the last post prior to birth. If this little boy shows up early, I'll be sure to post an announcement...or my husband will. :) And if you want to receive an email each time I post an update, subscribe using the form over there at the top right.

Thanks for coming along this journey with me...some of you for the second time.

Baby Stockton #2 Countdown - 38 Down, 2 to Go!

So, I reached week 38 this past Friday in terms of time, and I'm still 1 week ahead in fundal measurement. I have now gained 3-1/2 pounds from pre-pregnancy weight. We'll see what the final tally is on my son's birthday. Only gained 12 lbs. with my daughter.

Just a reminder, I have a "guessing game" online for folks to guess the length, weight, and actual birthday of our son. We will be awarding prizes (books, gift cards, and something else) to the top 3 with the closest guesses. So, get in there and have fun. :)

Now, we're at week 37.5, so here is the update:

I gotta say, I had my week 38 appointment last Friday, and it was with another doctor on staff with my doctor's team. He was on vacation. Well, that was the fastest I've ever gotten in and out of the office this entire pregnancy! By the time I updated my address with the front desk, the assistant called me back. I stepped on the scale, and then we went to the room where she took my blood pressure. She left to let me prepare for the doctor, and by the time I sat on the examination table, he was knocking on the door. He brought the nurse back in, did his standard checks, spread the goo on my belly to get my son's heartbeat, asked me if I had any questions, told me everything's looking great, and said fare-thee-well.

From the time I arrived to the time I left, it was about 20 minutes. I was shocked! It usually takes me an hour from arrival to when the appointment is done. This includes about 20 minutes in the waiting room and 10-15 minutes waiting for my doctor. I might just have to tease him this Friday at my week 39 appointment. It *will* be April Fool's after all. :)

Anyway, the other stats in measurement are as follows:

Dilated to 2 cm
Effaced at 50%
Baby weight estimate at 7-1/2 pounds
Baby's heartbeat was 153 (because the doctor had just nudged his head)
My blood pressure and weight are looking good, no issues

The final details are being rounded off before my rocket-baby's big launch into the world. For one, my adorable poop-factory's meconium stockpile is growing (time to get ready for that historical first tarry black poo!) as his baby fat stores continue to increase. Most importantly, my wee genius' rapidly developing super-brain is abuzz with new brain cells that'll be growing for years to come.

Woohoo!

Whether I give birth tomorrow (yes!) or next week (aw), my fantastic baby is pretty much 100% ready to face the world outside of your womb. And by "ready", that means weak, helpless and unable to do anything other than cry, pee, poop, and eat. :)

And now some words from the little acrobat inside me:

Not much new to report here, although that experience with Mama and the new doctor sure did set me on edge. He pushed on my head, my back, my rump, and even my feet, then told Mama I weighed about 7-1/2 pounds. I guess that's good, but what do I know? I'm tucked in this warm and snug little home and know I'm either getting bigger or my home is getting smaller. Whichever it is, at least I'm warm.

Last night, that big sister of mine was at it again with her screaming and stubbornness. I can't tell time right now, but I heard Mama say something about not letting her nap late anymore. Guess she didn't want to go to bed and kept coming out of her room. Then, at some point, I think she came to sleep with Mama and Daddy. Don't think they got much sleep.

She better start behaving, because when I arrive, I am going to need more of Mama's time, and she won't be the center of attention anymore. I sure hope Mama is ready for both of us. And I think she has help coming each week, but leaves a lot of time where it'll just be the two of us and her. Guess that means sleep won't be in abundance...for her anyway. Won't be long now. We'll see how things go.

It's me again. The mama. :) That's it for now. Tune in each week for the latest. If this little boy shows up early, I'll be sure to post an announcement...or my husband will. :) And if you want to receive an email each time I post an update, subscribe using the form over there at the top right.

Baby Stockton #2 Countdown - 37 Down, 3 to Go!

Well, I might have reached week 37 this past Friday in terms of time, but I'm now measuring at 38 weeks. So, my son is still about 1 week ahead in fundal measurement, but that can change depending upon where he shifts or how he's laying. I am back up 1 pound from pre-pregnancy weight.

At this point, I'm monitoring my body for those first Early Labor symptoms and wondering what I've forgotten. Hubby keeps reminding me we need to pack our hospital bag, but with recently moving into a new house and our daughter's 2nd birthday coming up on April 2nd, there is so much else on my mind. I'm doing what I can to take it easy, though. I promise. :)

My smooshed-up baby is weighing in at around 6.9 lbs and 19 inches. As far as his internal organs go, my adorable poop and blood factory has reached "term" - a medical term that means this sweet little bun is birth-ready and labor is welcome and normal at this point.

Despite being physically ready to land on planet Earth, my baby's immune system is quite weak and will continue to be that way for their first years of life. Thankfully, my breast milk (aka "boob medicine") protects my child via protective antibodies that are present in my breast milk. Worked great for our daughter, as my immune system is rather strong. So, I'll be able to pass on my immunities to my son as well. Can't beat that!

And now some words from the tiny roly-poly inside me:

Despite Mama hearing or reading that my movements are going to decrease as I get closer to my birthday, I'm still able to move and shift and find ways to get comfortable. I heard her remark to Daddy the other day about not being concerned for the 10 movements in 2 hours once a day thing her doctor told her. Yeah, I'm far more active. But with all that outside noise and the screeching from that big sister of mine, who can sleep?

Besides, Mama has been active, even though Daddy has told her to take it easy. Most of it feels like up and down, and I have noticed her movements aren't as jerky. I guess if I don't feel any discomfort or pain, she's doing all right. But with my lungs fully developed, I have to admit, I'm getting excited about seeing her face to face. Can't wait to have her hold me close and kiss my face. It's going to be great! Until then, I'll keep getting ready and wait until God tells me to come out. After all, He knows best.

It's me again. The mama. :) That's it for now. Tune in each week for the latest. And if you want to receive an email each time I post an update, subscribe using the form over there at the top right.

Baby Stockton #2 Countdown - 36 Down, 4 to Go!

Well, I might have reached week 36 this past Friday in terms of time, but I'm now measuring at 37 weeks. So, my son has gained a few days and put on some extra weight recently. I haven't gained any weight, though. Well, I did gain 3 lbs. at one point, but I've since lost that.

Now, we're at week 36.5, so here is the update:

The countdown to my sweet lil' womb hi-jacker's eviction is closing in!

In fetal developments: most of the bones (soft skull aside) in his little body are now completely hardened, providing a solid structure from which he can now make his grand debut into the world.

In physical fitness news: my mini-champ's muscle tone is improving, and I look forward to his steel-like Ulnar grasp (a newborn reflex that will occur when I lay my finger in his palm). It's amazing and sigh-inducing at the same time. Provides a great deal of pleasure, as well as a smile. Just one more way you can see immediate evidence of the little baby needing you.

For our lives, it's been a bit crazy the past week. We just signed the papers on our new house this past Thursday. Talk about a whirlwind of activity and a long list of things to do. We got our daughter's room painted, some cosmetic fixes completed on the house, and we managed to get an accent wall done in the main living area. But last night, we arrived at the house to discover a leak in the ceiling of our daughter's room. Bubbled ceiling, drips, and all. Praise God it wasn't as bad as it could have been, and we managed to get it under control. Also glad it happened before we moved in.

Still, with this move, a baby coming in 3-5 weeks, a book due to my editor by April 1st, and trying to take it easy, I'm feeling the strain. Praying for a ton of help this week from friends and family to finish packing, get us moved, and allow me to rest. Definitely don't want to cause any premature labor or issues for my baby boy.

And now some words from the tiny spaz-man inside me:

Ok, I'm still running out of room to move, and I'm getting those annoying things Mama calls "hiccups." They sure do make staying comfortable a difficult thing.

This past week, I've noticed a lot of increased movement, and it's felt as if I've been put on a rollercoaster of ups and downs, side to side, and waving motions. It's comforting, sometimes rocking me to sleep, but other times, it's hard to get to sleep with how fast Mommy is moving. I've also been picking up on some stress with Mommy. Sure hope she's doing all right. I know she's anxious to meet me and hold me. I'm just as anxious to meet her for the first time. Still not too sure about that little screamer who likes to bump against me or push on me. She has her loving moments, though, and I can feel it when she kisses Mama's belly or rubs the belly to be nice to me. I don't know. Maybe she's not so bad. Will have to wait and see.

Other than that, I'm just trying to figure out when I'm ready to make my appearance outside of Mommy's belly. It's so warm in here, even if it IS getting rather cramped. I have no doubt I'll be just as warm on the outside, wrapped in Mommy's or Daddy's arms. Looking forward to that day.

It's me again. The mama. :) That's it for now. Tune in each week for the latest. And if you want to receive an email each time I post an update, subscribe using the form over there at the top right.

Baby Stockton #2 Countdown - 35 Down, 5 to Go!

Wow, down to a single-hand countdown. And since we're so close, I have a "guessing game" online for folks to guess the length, weight, and actual birthday of our son. If you'd like to play, click the link below:

We will be awarding prizes (books, gift card, and something else) to the top 3 with the closest guesses. So, get in there and have fun. :)

Now, we're at week 35.5, so here is the update:

Yippee! I'm now carrying over 5 pounds of baby-goodness - not counting his amniotic fluid, the umbilical cord, or the placenta itself. And I've only gained 3 pounds this entire pregnancy, so that means I've lost at least 2 lbs. (more since the rest of the weight isn't factored here). Works for me! Just like with my daughter, it means I'll likely leave the hospital weighing less than I did pre-pregnancy. Amazing weight-loss plan. :)

Developmentally, my wee womb-tenant has the fat-factory running at full tilt while his digestive system puts the finishing touches on critical organs in preparation for his first meal (remember - before birth, all of his nutrition was blood via the umbilical cord).

With his first meal in mind, it's time to look forward to one of the most important things I'll do for my infant -  keeping him alive with nothing more than the milk from nursing. I was able to nurse my daughter for 13 months, and she thrived tremendously. I hope I can go that long with my son. We'll see how voracious of an appetite he has and if I can keep up. From all indications, I don't foresee a problem.

The other new development is we just bought a house, so now we have to move this month along with being less than 5 weeks from delivery. Praise God for friends and church family who have all told me they won't let me lift boxes or send myself into early labor due to stress or strain. Phew! We are so tremendously blessed!

In baby movement, Richard isn't kicking hardly at all anymore. He does get what feels like the shivers once in a while, still hiccups a lot, and rolls around quite often. Once in a while, he attempts to stretch and I feel the pain in my lower ribs or on my bladder. But on the whole, he's making do with the room he has left. Gaining about 1/2 to 1 lb. each week from here to end. We'll see how big he ends up being when he's born.

And now some words from the rolly-polly inside me:

Not much to report here. Life is getting more cramped by the day, but it's still warm and cozy in here. I am getting a bit lightheaded from being upside down, but it's not too bad. And I've noticed that big sister out there seems to prefer kissing my mama's belly or rubbing it instead of head-butting it like she used to do. I prefer that much better than the former. She might actually not be all that bad once I get to meet her. But I'm more excited to meet Mama and Daddy first. The rest of those people called "family" can wait.

I'm also picking up some excitement and tension and anticipation from Mama in here. Seems she's got a lot of things happening this month, so I think it's best if I do what I can to let her get some sleep and not be in pain. It's hard, since I don't know what hurts her and what doesn't, but I hope I can sense that and shift if she needs me to move so she can be more comfortable.

Not too long now, and I'll be able to see her or feel her myself. I'm looking forward to that day!

It's me again. The mama. :) That's it for now. Tune in each week for the latest. I'll get those new pix as soon as I can. And if you want to receive an email each time I post an update, subscribe using the form over there at the top right.

Baby Stockton #2 Countdown - Week 34, 6 to Go!

Almost to a single-hand countdown. That comes this Friday, March 4th. I'll be 5 weeks away. Before I get into the update, I started a "guessing game" online for folks to guess the length, weight, and actual birthday of our son. If you'd like to play, click the link below:

Now, we're at week 34.5, so here is the update:

My amazing baby is on the move! Until now, my wee womb-squatter's been living fairly high up in my poor stretched-out womb - blithely compressing my poor lungs and internal organs. This week the little fella's going to pack his tiny bags and make the "big" move to my pelvis - commonly referred to as the time when my baby "drops". Based on the minor pressure I've been feeling the past couple of days, I'd say he's definitely headed in that direction. He's been head-down for several weeks, but now he gets to squeeze in there and limit his movements even more.

Maybe I'll finally adopt the pregnant-waddle. :)

I've already noticed the weight shift to more focus being lower. And my little kiddo seems to prefer my bladder as a resting place for his head. When it's not there, it's resting on my pubic bone. And because of this shift, I've had some sharp, intermittent pains down low as he's started pressing on my sciatic nerve. This means the discomfort in sleeping and sitting is back. Unfortunately, this will likely remain until my boy decides to make an appearance on the outside. I'll have to do my best to remain limber, get out for walks when I can and loosen up my pelvic muscles as much as possible.

If that doesn't work, I'll get off my feet and do some spine-lengthening stretches to help this little tyke move OFF that poor throbbing nerve.

In developing internal-organ news: although not quite fully formed, my little poop-factory's liver is now capable of processing a certain amount of waste. Because his liver is not quite birth-ready, it's common for newborns to get a case of mild and harmless jaundice (signaled by a slight yellowing of the skin). My daughter had it, but it was gone within 24 hours when we took her home.

For those who aren't familiar with it, jaundice is the result of a baby's body producing more bilirubin (a by-product of blood production) than the liver can currently break down, leading to a subtle yellow tinge that goes away in a few days. Babies born earlier than their due date tend to have moderate to severe jaundice, which - in the hospital, will be treated via light therapy to help their body break down the bilirubin. For home-birthers, jaundice is easily dealt with by increased breastfeeding (to help their body pass the bilirubin) and "naked time" for baby in a warm sunlit area for 10 minute intervals throughout the day until it disappears.

I had it when I was born, so I wasn't surprised to see my daughter have a mild case of it. After all, she was 10 days late. :) Let's pray my son doesn't wait that long. Although, we're praying he waits until after April 2nd, which is our daughter's birthday.

Other than that, I'm hanging in here, trying to keep everything balanced with a pending closure on a new house, a book deadline, and chasing after a toddler. At least I got our taxes done this past Saturday. One less thing on my mind. Somehow I'll get it all done!

And now some words from the hiccuping rib-kicker inside me:

Not much to report here. Yes, I get what Mama calls the hiccups a lot. Seems I can't quite get the hang of this breathing thing just yet. But I'm working on it!

I haven't been able to move as much as I'd like, but I'm rolling around and shifting as much as I can to get comfortable. My poor head seems like it's stuck most of the time. Then, Mama does something to make me feel like I'm floating, and it helps a lot. Otherwise, all this other stuff in here keeps pressing on me.

Of course, that loud hollering and noise out there, along with pounding on Mama's belly (and thereby me too) is still happening. Heard someone say something about my big sister head-butting me early. Not sure what that means, as my head and my bum are in two different places, and they don't touch. But, I do recall feeling a jolt each time. It wasn't pleasant.

The other day, Mama was saying something about a pain in her ribs and how it must be my foot kicking her or something. The next day, she said she couldn't eat anything because I was keeping the food from going anywhere. I felt bad, but there was nothing I could do. I was hungry too, so at least she kept some juice and water and some other sweet stuff coming my way. That night, she settled in such a way that I could move, and we were both all right.

Yes, I've started to swim a little further down. Not sure how long this journey will take, but it seems like the thing to do. All this work is making me tired, so I think I'll take another rest.

It's me again. The mama. :) That's it for now. Tune in each week for the latest. I'll get those new pix as soon as I can. And if you want to receive an email each time I post an update, subscribe using the form over there at the top right.

Baby Stockton #2 Countdown - Week 33, 7 to Go!

Finally! We have our printer back, so I could scan the newest ultrasound pictures from week 30. Unfortunately, the printing function is broken, so we have to get a replacement. Praise God we were still under warranty, so the replacement is free! Phew! Should be here this week. Never know how much you miss a simple thing like printing until you can't do it.

The same goes for missing the movements of a baby inside of you. It's fun feeling the rolls, kicks, and even the hiccups. :)

And now, we're in week 33, so here is the update:

For all the weight and bulk I'm lugging around these days, you’d think my little champ would weigh more than a mere 4-1/2 pounds! But once you add in the placenta, amniotic fluid, and extra blood, I've got at least 10 pounds of baby and their life-support gear smooshed up against my organs! Oh joy!

No wonder why heartburn is increasing, and I find I can't eat more than just a little of the normal portions at meals. I'm snacking most of the day, just like my toddler daughter. :) A little bit here, a little bit there. Drinking lots of water and fluids. And of course, spending more time down the hall emptying my bladder -- the place my son seems to like resting his head more often these days. (sigh)

In terms of appearance, my sweet lil' looker is getting cuter and pudgier every day as he piles on that adorable baby fat. I was at a conference this past weekend and there was a table featuring life-size babies at various stages of development. The one for 32 weeks looked too small to me, but it sure was cute! I actually held the "model" and placed it against my belly.

And when I did, my son gave a hefty kick. LOL! My womb kick-boxer is getting stronger with every passing day. And it’s even possible to observe a well-placed belly-wobbling kick just by watching my belly! He's kicked my daughter too, but she looks at me as if I did it. Her face is precious, wrinkled brow and all.

See those feet over there? Big, just like my daughter was. But since I wear a size 10 and my husband wears a 16, our kids don't stand a chance. :)

Guess it's a good thing he doesn't kick too hard...at least not yet. She'll be in for a rude awakening when he can fight back from all the "abuse" she's given him while he's been cooking in my womb. :) There also a fun game for when a baby is especially active: place a small object (baby blocks or a remote control) on your belly and see how far your star-kicker can lob that thing across the room! I haven't done that yet, but I might when this little one gets going.

And there isn't much time left, as despite his obviously increasing strength, my bigger-by-the-day baby will actually start dropping his rate of movement in the last few weeks, no thanks to his restricted womb space. So, if I'm going to test his foot-strength, I better do it soon!

I remember with my daughter, about a week before she came, I had gone several hours without feeling any movement. I drank some cold juice, laid on my side and waited for some added movement. Still nothing. So I called my doctor and had to do an ultrasound at week 40 plus stress tests and a whole host of other things. In the end, she was fine. Just cramped. I have no doubt my son will be the same.

At the ultrasound, the technician couldn't get a picture of my son's face because he had his hands up there, his feet up there, and even the umbilical cord there. It was almost like, "You're not going to see me. I'm hiding." You can see the hand and head below, but just to the left of the hand, you can make out his foot. They were all up there together. Silly boy.

And now some words from the hiccuping kangaroo inside me:

All right, what's all this about me not moving enough? If Mama wants more movements, I can oblige. She just needs to give me a little more room or stop complaining when I shove something out of the way to stretch my legs. It's hard to tell from in here, but I think I have it pretty good. If I get cramped, she usually moves within a few minutes, and I can find a more comfortable position.

When it gets really dark in here, I don't notice as much movement, so it takes me a little longer to get comfortable. But once I am, Mama and I both rest for several hours. At least I do. Sometimes I get the feeling she isn't sleeping as much as I, and there are some days or nights when it feels like she rolls from side to side a lot. A few weeks ago, there was a time when some popping sound echoed across my little home here. Not sure what it was, but Mama said she felt better afterward. And if she feels better, I feel better. So who am I to complain?

Two nights ago, I sensed she was really worn out. But that was probably because that big sister of mine was screaming a lot and wouldn't do something I heard Mama and Daddy call "night-night." The crying and loud noise went on for over an hour. Maybe even two. Poor Mama and Daddy. And this was after I heard them say my sister had only taken something called a "nap" for 45 minutes. She also woke up a lot earlier than normal from what I could tell.

I don't know. I might just have to set her straight when I come out there. Show her who is boss. Good thing these incidents don't happen often, or I think Mama might be really worn out. Guess I have to wait a little while longer before I can see what all the hub-bub is. In the meantime, I'll stay here in my snug little sac to finish cooking, as Mama says a lot. Sounds like it's much safer here.

It's me again. The mama. :) That's it for now. Tune in each week for the latest. I'll get those new pix as soon as I can. And if you want to receive an email each time I post an update, subscribe using the form over there at the top right.

Baby Stockton #2 Countdown - Week 32, 8 to Go!

Another week, and no new pictures again, as our printer/scanner is still at the repair shop. It needed a serious attitude adjustment. :)

Some good news though! My husband's cousin went in yesterday to be induced, as her baby was already over 9 lbs! Of course, this morning, we received a call to update us on the progress. Baby Sturgeon hasn't yet arrived. By midnight last night, contractions were 2 minutes apart, but then mama fell asleep and she woke this morning only dilated to 4cm. So, in came the pitocin, and things are rolling again. Looks like the baby wanted to be a Valentine's Day baby. With an older brother and sister, and a big family, this little one will never suffer from lack of love.

As for me, we're in week 32, and here is the update:

In the latest womb reports, my amazing baby has now developed sensitivity to temperature! This means I'm now getting a swift kick if I put a hot pad or bag of ice, even cold hands, on my gigantic belly. He's already reacted to my husband's hands when they're warm and pressing on my tummy. And yesterday, with the wind blowing, I got a kick immediately following a strong, cool, blast.

In the physical characteristics realm, for the Elton John lovers out there - baby’s got blue eyes. Actually, even if you're too young to know who Elton is, all babies have blue eyes at this point. Their true eye color takes several months after birth to fully develop. Blue could easily change after birth (or even between now and labor), but for the time being, blue it is.

Thanks to their recently matured lungs and a strengthening immune system, over 90% of babies born in their 32nd week survive! So, I can go ahead and throw a mini-party right now because it’s pretty much a done deal - I've got a human-being that's going to make it! That's not to say I actually want my wee womb-squatter to pack his bags and move out now, because he'd still end up in the ICU for a good while, rather than in my arms at home. But at least I know if something were to happen, he'd be fine. No indications of that, though, as this little fella is growing right on schedule with no complications. Praise God!

Besides, babies are best when fully baked! So, I'll keep this bun in my oven for a little while longer....even if his favorite spot these days seems to be directly on my bladder. (sigh)

In other news, we've scheduled our pre-admission time at the hospital and have filled out our preliminary paperwork for labor and delivery preferences. I've also scheduled my prenatal appointments out to week 38, which is the end of March. We'll see just how long this little tyke decides to stay in the womb.

And now some words from the spazz-master inside me:

All right, all this names. A little guy like me can get real confused on who I really am. Makes me wonder just how many different names I'll be called when I'm on the outside. At least they all sound affectionate and not mean. I have a feeling I'll get enough mean from my big sister when I do something to annoy her. So, I can handle all these other names from Mommy and Daddy.

And speaking of that big sister, this morning, Mommy got real cross. She sounded very upset and frustrated. Immediately after that, my sister cried a little. Then, I was put on what felt like a big roller-coaster that went in side to side rhythmic motion with an occasional shift in direction. I hear something about not drawing on the wall and how Mommy had to clean it all up. I don't know what that all means, but it didn't sound good.

Anyway, life is still trodding along day by day. I'm getting more and more cramped, but Mommy usually moves enough to make it bearable. I find a new position, and it works for a while. When that isn't enough, I move, and it's good again. Now, it's time for some sleep.

It's me again. The mama. :) That's it for now. Tune in each week for the latest. I'll get those new pix as soon as I can. And if you want to receive an email each time I post an update, subscribe using the form over there at the top right.

Baby Stockton #2 Countdown - Week 31, 9 to Go!

Well, we made it. Single digits in the countdown. No new pictures this week, though, as our printer/scanner was acting up and needed to go to the repair shop for an attitude adjustment. :)

But for now, as of week 31, here is the update:

This week, my amazing growing baby is around 4 pounds and 17 inches tall. He's predicted to gain about 1/2 pound each week from here on out. So, that means he has a chance of being an 8-lb. baby. Praise God my OB has said he won't let me go past the baby being 9 lbs. Phew! Glad to hear that.

With each added layer of baby fat, my baby's wrinkly raisin skin starts to look more and more like it will when he's finally here on the outside. His developing immune system has made some serious gains over the past weeks too, getting him in full gear to face our disease-ridden world o’ wonders. And considering how often his big sister gets runny noses or the sniffles, I pray his immune system is as strong or stronger than hers. At least she's only had 1 ear infection.

Even so, a large majority of my son’s immune strength will need to come from my milk in the first year. And if all goes well like his sister, I'll be nursing for the first year or beyond, depending upon when he decides to wean himself. His sister stopped at about 13 months on her own.

Now, in the physical characteristic world, his cute little noggin’ (which could already be covered with luscious locks like his sister has now or just purty peach fuzz), is still soft because the skull bones have not yet fused together. As disturbing as having an infant with a soft cracked skull sounds, it's pretty much a necessity for passage through the birth canal during labor. I can't imagine an inflexible skull during that process. Ouch!

This little guy's sister got hung up a smidgen in the birth canal, and she had a short-term cone head. Her poor skull plates were compressed while in my rather snug birth canal. It's normal, harmless, and her skull evened out in a matter of days to a smooth, round head. Gotta admit, though, seeing those pictures of her during her first bath really threw me at first.

Oh, and FYI: as with almost all babies, my son may have that “soft spot” on his head for up to eighteen months after birth. His big sister lost hers around 15 months. So, we'll see.

I had a prenatal appointment today too, and everything is looking fantastic. Baby boy's heartbeat was 146, I'm measuring at 32 weeks (just 4 days ahead), this fella is head down and pushing all the time on my poor pelvis, and I've only gained 3 pounds overall during this pregnancy. We'll see what the final count is when all is said and done on delivery day. But if I can keep up, I'll leave the hospital weighing less than I did pre-pregnancy. Just like with my daughter. Amazing weight-loss plan God has here. *winks*

And now some words from the squirmy-wormy inside me:

Not as much to say this week. I've been trying to be as comfortable as possible and sleeping a lot. But I do remember to get in some good kicks each day just so Mama knows I'm still here. Of course, I can feel her rubbing her belly where I am several times a day, and she tells people about me pushing on her pelvis--whatever that is--so she's forced to do the pregnancy waddle. That sounds like a fun thing to do. Wonder how it looks.

Something I've been hearing a lot lately is this word, "no." It's usually followed by crying or whimpering and then soothing voices from either Mama or that Daddy fella. My guess is my big sister did something she wasn't supposed to do, and that didn't make Mama happy. Good to know the soft tones and what I think are hugs follow though. At least I can count on those when I do something bad.

I also have been sensing some stress from Mama lately. Something about a house and wanting to get things done before I arrive. Guess I better behave myself in here and let them get everything finished first. (stretching) It's not so bad inside here, and I still have room to wiggle or move a bit. Getting harder and harder though, so I hope this house thing works out soon. From what I hear, there are only a few more weeks to go.

Now it's time for me again. The mama. :) That's it for now. Tune in each week for the latest. I'll get those new pix as soon as I can. And if you want to receive an email each time I post an update, subscribe using the form over there at the top right.

Baby Stockton #2 Countdown - Week 30, 10 to Go!

Just 10 weeks left. That means next week, I'll be posting in the single digits. In some ways, it feels like it's taking forever. In others, it feels like it's gone so fast. And I know these final weeks are going to fly!

And now, as of week 30, here is the update:

The light is visible at the end of the tunnel! My over-sized self and amazing growing son have finally reached the single digits (in terms of weeks till birth)! The fine lanugo hair that has been growing all over Richard's little monkey-like body is going to start falling off this week in preparation for the big day. But I've been warned to not be shocked if he's hairier than I’d anticipated, as some babies keep their lanugo until after birth. Hmm...makes me wonder how much hair he's going to have on his head, not just his body. His sister didn't have much for the first year, but phew! It's sure made up for lost time! It's almost to the middle of her back when wet. But with all the curls she has, who can tell? :) I can still see some red highlights, so I'm holding out hope she might end up with my strawberry-blonde shades. I'd love to have a redheaded little girl. But guess that final decision is up to God. And He always knows best.

No surprises here: my little porker is getting even cuter with increasingly pudgy arms and legs this week thanks to the ever-growing layers of subcutaneous fat. In terms of numbers, this fella weighs in at around 3 pounds 10 ounces and he's about 16 inches long. That means he's running out of room and having to be quite squished. With his head down and pushing on my pelvis, I feel bad he has to be so cramped.

This past week, I had another ultrasound, and the technician was going to try to get a 3-D image for me. One problem. Richard had his feet up by his face. He had his hands up by his face. And he had the umbilical cord up in front of his face. It was almost as if he was saying, "You're not going to see me. You're not going to see my face. I'm hiding!" I did manage to get a good shot of his fist, and some head shots, along with another confirmation he's still a boy, and a picture of his big feet. :) But I haven't had a chance to scan them, so they'll be here next week.

As for me, the ongoing joys of being in your third trimester are still raging: my not-so-fun symptoms are intensifying this week, so I've been told it might not hurt to slow down a bit and focus on my. Not easy with a toddler around the house, but I'm doing the best I can. If I'm feeling extra fatigued, I've unfortunately joined the sleeping shouldn’t be this tough when I’m this tired club, especially since I'm experiencing a lot of S-I joint pain and general discomfort. I do have an appointment with a chiropractor on Thursday to see if he can help ease some of the pain. Just like when this pregnancy first started, I need to focus more on getting proper sleep. A pregnancy pillow won't work in our bed, since I married a 6'3" broad-shouldered man, and that kind of pillow takes up too much room, so a body pillow will have to do. I'm just glad I don't have to worry about the moodiness and mood swings. With everything else I'm doing, who has the time? :)

And now some words from the future field-goal kicker inside me:

All right, I can't be silent about this one. Mama has been squishing me a lot this week. Now, that might be because I'm growing bigger and there is less room. But I've had to kick and stretch and push against my confines a lot more. I've also been getting the hiccups more frequently. I hear Mama telling that guy with the deep voice about it. Then, she mentions something about gripe water, but I have a feeling that won't help me inside here. If it tastes as good as she says it does, though, I look forward to tasting it for the first time. I know my big sister loves it, and her hiccups go away almost instantly. Sure wish I could get these hiccups to go away that fast.

And speaking of that big sister, I've noticed the shrieking is getting less and less. Maybe Mama is finally getting through to her. That, or she's growing up and realizing she can't be yelling like that all the time. When I come out there, I'm not going to take too kindly to all that screeching. I might just have to do some yelling of my own to get it to stop. But that might hurt Mama's ears, so I hope I won't have to deal with it too much.

There was this patting and tapping too that happened a lot last week. Mama kept telling my big sister to stop hitting her baby brother, that Richard was going to kick her. Richard. I guess that's me. I hear that word a lot when Mama is talking about me. And there's Tori or Victoria who I suppose is my big sister. That word I hear even more often than Richard. It sounds pretty when I hear it. I just hope she's as nice as her name sounds when I finally get to meet her. Not sure, with all that noise and bumping against me. But something tells me I'm going to like having a big sister. Guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Now it's time for me again. The mama. :) That's it for now. Tune in each week for the latest. And if you want to receive an email each time I post an update, subscribe using the form over there at the top right.

Baby Stockton #2 Countdown - Week 29, 11 to Go!

Just 11 weeks left. Actually, it's more like 10-1/2 since the marker changes every Friday. But I post on Mondays, and don't want to get ahead of the game, so I go with the most recent completed week.

And now, as of week 29, here is the update:

The sleeping discomfort is still here, as are the round ligament pains. But thankfully, the gas seems to have subsided quite a lot. Praise God! The newest thing is feeling little butterflies moving around in my belly, and that's my amazing little baby with a case of the hiccups: a fairly common occurrence at this point resulting from practicing breathing for their big birthday. Let's just hope this little guy doesn't get them as often as his Papa and sister do. Could mean a continued investment in a lot of gripe water! And if you have a little one but haven't heard of this, look it up. All-natural blend of ginger and fennel, and for us, it's cured hiccups instantly. Amazing stuff!

Now, in addition to getting a round of butterfly-like hiccups, my little swimmer has arduously managed to accumulate enough baby fat to account for nearly 3.5% of his overall body weight. Yeah, compared to us adults, it’s not a lot, but when they’re little like that—it’s a healthy accomplishment in his own way. We'll see on Thursday how much this tyke weighs, and that will tell me how much of him is body fat at this point.

Another fantastic accomplishment: my baby's spleen is now in charge of hematopoiesis—the 10 dollar name for the process involved in building up certain important blood components. And my little monkey has been peeing into his amniotic sac for several weeks now (which is why potty training takes a while, especially for boys) and if you didn’t know, actually swallows it along with the rest of the amniotic fluid. Yeah, I know. Gross! But although the concept is nasty, their urine is sterile and as part of the amniotic fluid base, is replaced several times throughout the day. So if you didn’t know before, now you can tell people, that yes, every one of you drank your own urine—you were still in the womb, but nonetheless, you’ve been there. :) Ok, so that likely won't become an ice breaker or frequent topic of conversation. But you never know where it might come in handy. Perhaps with blackmail on your children or to simply gross out some younger kids or teenagers.

Finally, while I don't feel like I'm all that big, considering I have about 10 weeks left until due date, I certainly notice it when I'm cooking dinner or doing the dishes. It's becoming a common occurrence for me to bump into counters, tabletops, doors, walls, and a variety of other things as I walk. Sometimes I plumb forget I've got this big belly sticking out in front of me--6-7 inches more than when I'm not pregnant. That can make a heap of difference in what you're able to do and how close you're able to get to something. With my short arms, cooking and doing dishes, or reaching for things just isn't as easy as it used to be. Sure glad I've got some nice padding, or my boy would be getting squished quite often. :)

This Thursday, I'll have a 3rd ultrasound, so I might have some new pictures next week. All depends on if my son decides to cooperates. Last time, the technician had to keep telling him to stop wiggling and kicking. Active fella, for sure!

And now some words from the future field-goal kicker inside me:

Ok, so this week was a bit less stressful than the most recent ones. I've been doing a lot of twisting and turning and rolling around. There hasn't been nearly as much screeching or loud voices. Just lots of laughter and some very nice singing. It's lulled me to sleep on numerous occasions. There were two times when I got jostled around quite a bit, but it was so much fun! I think I heard Mama say something to that big sister character about going over the "bumpies." If they're this much fun on the inside, I can only imagine how much better they'll be once I'm out.

The past few days were very relaxing. I could tell Mama was getting a lot of rest. She said something about it being the last chance for a long while. Sure hope that doesn't mean I'm going to tire her out or keep her from sleeping. If it does, I'm not doing it on purpose. She's given me this great place to grow and stay warm. The last thing I want to do is make her tired. Maybe that Daddy character will help out some.

And speaking of tired, I think I'm done. Mama said something about getting to see me again this week. If I can figure it out, maybe I'll try to wave to her. For now, I'm going to close my eyes and get some rest.

Now it's time for me again. The mama. :) That's it for now. Tune in each week for the latest. And if you want to receive an email each time I post an update, subscribe using the form over there at the top right.

Baby Stockton #2 Countdown - Week 28, 12 to Go!

Just 12 weeks left. Inching ever closer to those single-digit weeks. And now, as of week 28, here is the update:

Fatigue is back in spades, and the little guy is pushing on anything and everything, shifting it all out of place. Amazing that everything still works...well for the most part. :) More frequent visits to the restroom, and it's nigh onto impossible to get a solid night's sleep. But I suppose I should get used to that again. Going to have a newborn waking a few times in the night until he settles into a routine. Praying he's like his sister in that regard and figures it out in 7 weeks or less. :)

I'm going to be calling a chiropractor this week to set up an appointment and see if he can help with the S-I joint pains or even make any adjustments that might help make sleeping or sitting more comfortable. The round ligament pains make standing and walking difficult, even after sitting just 5 minutes.

And you know, I’ve been feeling a bit like a barn with legs lately? Richard has shifted and pushed out more. He's moving a lot, and I know he's on his way toward making that spin to be head-down. One more prenatal appointment before I go to every 2 weeks. Then, in March, it will be every week. My last appointment went quite well. Blood pressure was 110/72 and Richard's heartbeat was 160, but that was because I'd just got done drinking some super sweet stuff for the glucose test. Praise God I passed and didn't have to do anything more. With Victoria, I had to go back and do a 3-hour test. Blech! That meant THREE of those bottles.

Anyway, for now, I’ve got myself a little boy in the business of collecting fat and lots of it! In spite of the dubious joys of being a human-barn, this baby fat business is very serious and I’ve got to put up with it because it’s going to keep my little porker warm and healthy after birth.

Other good stuff from inside: his eyes are doing lots of blinking this week because they’re now able to respond to light and dark. We'll probably do the flash light on my belly in the dark to see if he responds. His big sister did. She gave a good kick at the light. Also, my son's industrious little bone marrow is now a major construction site for developing red blood cells, while his super-cute adrenal glands are actually producing androgen and estrogen—which will stimulate my hormones to begin milk production. Can we say, “Moo?” :)

And now for some words from the little wiggle-worm inside me:

Well, I had a pretty exciting week this past week. I'm not sure if there was an earthquake or what, but I was rocking and being tossed all over the place. I can only guess it was somehow connected to that annoying big sister I'll be meeting soon. Sure hope she's as sweet on the outside as mommy and daddy say she is, because from what I can hear and feel, I'm not so sure.

But I guess I can't complain. For the most part, it's a nice and comfy spot I've got here. I often hear some nice singing, fun music, and laughter. So, life on the outside can't be all the bad. Still, all things considered, I think I'll stay in here just a little while longer and enjoy this peace and solitude. Something tells me I won't get much of it for a while once I'm out.

Now it's time for me again. The mama. :) That's it for now. Tune in each week for the latest. And if you want to receive an email each time I post an update, subscribe using the form over there at the top right.

Baby Stockton #2 Countdown - Week 26, 14 to Go!

Just 14 weeks left. Still feels surreal and some days I have to remind myself I'm pregnant. Then, I look at my growing belly and see it's true. :)

This past week, my sister-in-law finally had her little boy. She's been having contractions since the middle of November, but she wasn't due until December 19th. Unfortunately, the contractions weren't doing anything. After all that time, Michael Vaughn Stockton made his appearance, just 10 days late. He weighed 8lbs, 6oz, and he was 21 inches long. My little one is going to have a cousin just 3 months older. It's going to be great!

And now, as of week 26, here is the update:

For those who are just tuning in, we had our ultrasound on December 2nd, and.... drum roll...

IT'S A BOY!

That's right. We've got an all-American male growing inside me, and he is an active little bugger. Richard Vaughn Stockton. We'll be calling him Richie.

At long last, my little swimmer can see the womb! My miracle boy’s little eyelids have finally separated (they were fused closed previously) and he's probably having his first moments of sight as you read this. Can't imagine it's much to see, but I know some light gets in there for him throughout the day, especially when I'm outside in the bright sunshine.

In addition to seeing his little studio in my belly, he's recently acquired the ability to say “yes” and “no” in rudimentary sign language as he can now move his head back and forth. Sure hope he's practicing "yes" more than "no." :) This is also the time where this little super star’s head hair is starting to grow! Hmm...wonder what color it will be, and if it will be curls and waves like his sister or straight and fine. A cute little cowlick or two may be springing into position right now, getting ready for years of cute-but-stubborn bed-head.

His toenails have grown in and my little raisin continues to slowly pile up fat beneath his still-loose skin. Most importantly, brain tissue and neurons are all developing at a rapid pace, increasing his (genius-level?) brain activity and will continue to function at accelerated levels for the first seven to eight years of childhood! Amazing to think how fast and how much that little brain grows in those early years.

And now for some words from the wiggle-worm inside me:

That shrieking I mentioned last week continues, although I'm hearing more and more stern-sounding responses from Mommy when it happens. I sure hope that big sister doesn't make that loud noise when I'm outside this womb. My poor ears!

This past week, I picked up some other, very pleasant sounds. From what I can tell, it's singing, and it's so soothing. Of course, sometimes it's accompanied by some back and forth motion or other movement. I have to struggle between listening to the singing and being rocked to sleep. Sure hope that *does* continue when I'm on the outside. It sounds so nice.

A few days ago, a large warmth spread across my mommy's tummy. I think I heard her say it was my daddy. He must have really big hands to make that much area warm. Just to let him know I'm here, I gave him a few good kicks. He didn't seem to mind, though. In fact, he sounded really happy and he kept his hand there to feel some more. But I was tired, so I went to sleep. And I think that's what I'm going to do now. Bye for now.

Me again. The mama. :) That's it for now. Tune in each week for the latest. And if you want to receive an email each time I post an update, subscribe using the form over there at the top right.

Thanks for coming along this journey with me...some of you for the second time.

Baby Stockton #2 Countdown - Week 25, 15 to Go!

Just 15 weeks left. Almost down to single digits in the weeks. Still doesn't feel real. But as of week 25, here is the update:

For those who haven't tuned in for the past 3 weeks, we had our ultrasound on December 2nd, and.... drum roll...

IT'S A BOY!

That's right. We've got an all-American male growing inside me, and he is an active little bugger. Richard Vaughn Stockton. We'll be calling him Richie.

My boy’s physical proportions are evening out at this point and most of his remaining development will largely be weight gain and lots and lots of nervous system development. Oh joy! More gaining weight. I'm so thrilled. :)

The good news is: if for some reason, my boy is born premature, at this point, he’ll be more likely to survive without too much trauma as his lungs began to produce “surfactant” last week, which means his tiny respiratory system is getting stronger with each passing day. Now’s a good time for a minor sigh of relief and a quick pat on the back. All that hard work and conscientious living is really getting my son prepared for a healthy delivery.

This week he’ll be scootching slowly out of the old breech position and start rotating (already!) into a better position for exit during his birth. His head and feet are slowly rotating so that his head is pointed down toward the birth canal. Time is short (or really long, depending on who you ask)—just (still!) 15 weeks left before I can go back to being a single-resident human. And if you talk to my sister-in-law, she'd say time is LONG! She was due with her boy on Dec. 19th, but baby Michael still hasn't decided to join the air-breathing population just yet. We're all praying for one day this week. That gal is ready to bust!

And now for some words from the wiggle-worm inside me:

Well, I've been enjoying hearing all the muffled sounds on the outside. There's some high-pitched shrieking that I think is coming from something called a "sister." I don't know what that is, but I have a regretful feeling I'll be finding out real soon. If that sister is responsible for all that thumping and pounding on my mommy's tummy, waking me up and disrupting my comfort zone, I might just have to teach her who's boss!

At least it's not all the time, and I have my mommy's voice to soothe me, her warm hand to comfort me, and the methodic rocking of her movements to lull me back to sleep. Oh yeah, and I've given some good healthy kicks to the person my mommy calls "daddy." It sounds like mommy, so he must be just as important. There's so many strange things out there. I look forward to seeing it all for myself. But for now, I'll enjoy this warm, snug, and safe cocoon where I currently live.

Me again. The mama. :) That's it for now. Tune in each week for the latest. And if you want to receive an email each time I post an update, subscribe using the form over there at the top right.

Baby Stockton #2 Countdown - Week 24, 16 to Go!

Wow, just 16 weeks left. I tell ya. Get past that halfway point, and it just flies!

And as of week 24, here is the update:

For those who haven't tuned in for the past 2 weeks, we had our ultrasound last week, on December 2nd, and.... drum roll...

IT'S A BOY!

That's right. We've got an all-American male growing inside me, and he is an active little bugger. Richard Vaughn Stockton.

This is another big week for my magical growing baby! Just take a look at the checklist for this week: 1) ears: done; 2) fingernails: done; 3) testicles: taking their 3-4 day trip from the abdominal wall to the scrotum; and 4) lungs walls: secreting “surfactant”. What’s that? Well, surfactant is sort of what it sounds like: a surface-activated fat whose main purpose is to assist my son's little lungs during inflation (as in, filling with air, not getting more expensive).

Goodness, sure wish I could get that much accomplished in one week. :) To the left is my latest belly shot, week 24.

Just in case you’re curious, my submerged baby is still breathing in amniotic fluid, preparing and rehearsing the lungs an oxygen-filled life outside the womb. By the end of this week, my son will be weighing around 2 lbs and 14 inches long. My cutie-patootie may even be a little more plump, but isn't anywhere near their full baby-fatted cute-self. Most of the “filling out” is coming up in that long awaited (and slightly dreaded?) third trimester. Woo-hoo! I better get ready! It'll be here in just 3 more weeks. Yikes!

And now for some words from the wiggle-worm inside:

All right, so it's finally my turn to say something. My mama's been sharing updates with you for weeks, telling you all about what's happening inside here. But let me tell you, it sure feels far different than the way she describes it. Sure, she's getting kicks and feels the movement, but you have no idea what's it like when she eats something cold or sweet or spicy. Wow! It sure hits ya like a ton of bricks sometimes. And you wonder why I wiggle and squirm!

The other reason is I'm hearing about how much less room I'll have before long, so I'm enjoying moving in the space I have now. Seems like I should get used to it before things get tight and cramped. My legs are already feeling the pinch. But it's all right. I'm warm and cozy and feeling the love. Looking forward to making my debut in a few months. Then, I'm sure mama will share pictures so all of you can see me too. Now, it's back to sleep for me. Zzzzzzz.

Me again. The mama. :) That's it for now. Tune in each week for the latest. And if you want to receive an email each time I post an update, subscribe using the form over there at the top right.

Thanks for coming along this journey with me...some of you for the second time.

Baby Stockton #2 Countdown - Week 23, 17 to Go!

Ok, just 17 weeks left. And as of week 23, here is the update:

For those who didn't tune in last week, we had our ultrasound on December 2nd, and.... drum roll...

IT'S A BOY!

That's right. Richard Vaughn Stockton is growing inside of me and is quite the wiggle-worm.

At this point I’ve pretty much adjusted to the fact I’ve got a moving little gymnast inside of me, but now he's going to kick up the party a notch because he can hear and react to sounds from the outside world. Sounds from my alarm clock, a thunder roll, or that darned car honking at me across the intersection can actually jar his little ears enough to elicit a kick or violent bout of squirming. Good thing we don't live in New York City or some other big city known for crazy drivers and honkers. My boy would be kicking twice as much!

Of course this also means his little ears are picking up the sounds of my voice and those near me. I've been talking and singing to him for weeks now—and if he starts kicking, I take it as a kick of approval. :)

My boy's tiny taste buds are still growing and his bones are continuing to ossify (harden), his tiny veins are visible through his translucent yet wrinkly skin. He's been swimming in the equivalent of a long hot bath for the past 23 weeks, so can you blame him for being a little prune-like? It'll all stretch out and smooth out by the time he's ready to make his presence on the outside.

That's it for now. Next week, you'll get to hear from Richard himself from the womb. Tune in each week for the latest. And if you want to receive an email each time I post an update, subscribe using the form over there at the top right.

Baby Stockton #2 Countdown - Week 22, 18 to Go!

Seems hard to believe there are just 18 weeks left. 40 weeks or 9 months sounds like such a long time. But once you've made it halfway, it feels like it's going so much faster.

And as of week 22, here is the update:

We had our ultrasound last week, on December 2nd, and.... drum roll...

IT'S A BOY!

That's right. We've got an all-American male growing inside me, and he is an active little bugger. The ultrasound tech kept telling him to stop wiggling and squirming and called him a wiggle-worm several times. Hmm, does that mean we're in trouble when this little guy is on the outside? I don't know. Our daughter is rather active, running a lot and constantly on the move, and she was fairly normal in the womb. Definitely not as active as my son.

Wow, it feels so great to say that. My son. :) It will make it much easier here too in regard to pronouns. No more he/she stuff. God is awesome to give us one of each. And we're done with this one. I'm getting too old for this. (grins)

So, for development of this little tyke, the grow must go on! I'm now housing a wonder-baby who weighs one full pound and measures a foot in length. His perfect little pancreas is now further developed and he's also started producing his own hormones!

My son's future in the circus as a world-famous tight-rope-walker is secure too: his inner ear is now developed to the point he has his own sense of balance. And look at those long legs! Takes after his daddy, for sure. Lucky for my little explorer, balance also promotes physical dexterity, which has him actively feeling out his surroundings where skin, body parts, and the resident umbilical cord are the big sensory experiences.

My foot-long baby is looking a bit like an oversized raisin right now as more and more wrinkles are showing up each week. But all that excessive wrinkling is just his skin's way of planning ahead for the time when he'll start piling on that irresistible baby chub. I can hardy wait to squeeze those cheeks...the ones on the face, that is. :)

That's it for now. Tune in each week for the latest. And if you want to receive an email each time I post an update, subscribe using the form over there at the top right.
