AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR FEATURE AUTHOR

Balancing Act

When people find out I’m an author along with being a pastor’s wife and mother of four children, the first thing they ask is how do I find time to write? Great question!

I first started writing almost ten years ago. At the time I had a toddler and a newborn baby at home. I never planned on being a writer, but at the encouragement of my husband, and after I had an idea that eventually became my first novel, I started writing. Usually I wrote during nap-times (if I didn’t need one myself) or in the evening when my husband had meetings at the church.

It was a slow progress. I usually only wrote a page or two in during those few precious hours. However, I found I could brainstorm all the time, especially when doing housework. There is nothing like four loads of laundry to fold or a counter full of dishes to wash with music in the background to get my imagination going. I was known to place my laptop on the wash machine and type out ideas, character descriptions, or dialogue in between matching socks.

I wrote this way for six years, slowly learning the craft of writing, reading books on writing, plugging along on my novel, and attending conferences when I could. One thing I learned while balancing kids and writing (by this time twins had joined our family) was that I did not want to miss out on my kids’ lives. I would always have my writing, but my children were growing up fast and I didn’t want to miss out.

I applied some life convictions my husband held about ministry to my writing life. My husband never wanted our children growing up hating the church because it took daddy away from them. So he purposely placed boundaries around our family and around ministry.

I chose to have those same convictions. I did not want my children growing up believing that writing was more important than they were. That has not always been easy. There were days when I was so tired of changing diapers and cleaning up spilled milk that all I could think about was the day when I could be a full time writer.

However, I knew eventually my children would grow and be in school, and I would finally have time to write. So I served my children and took my laptop out when they napped or after they were in bed.

Eventually they started school and I was ready to become a full time writer. Then my husband lost his job and our world came crashing down around us. Six months into unemployment, I knew I could help my family by going back to work full time. But I also knew that I could not balance family, work, and writing. I would need to give something up, and that something had to be writing.

Even now I remember that night on my knees, crying as I told God I would walk away from my writing. No more query letters to agents, no more conferences, no more writing. Mentally I tucked my writing away into a small place in my heart and moved on. I knew my writing would be there someday, something I could come back to, but my family needed me now. The next day I started my job.

It is funny how when we finally give our dreams over to God that He has a way of giving them back to us. Two weeks into my job, I received an email from a publishing company I had sent a proposal to almost two years earlier. The editor loved the manuscript and wanted to know if I was still interested.

Wow!

I talked to my husband and prayed about it, then sent back my reply: Yes. Definitely yes!

Six months later, my husband found another job and I was able to come back home and start writing again.

I still find myself challenged to balance writing, family, and ministry, especially now with deadlines. So this is how I do it: first, I have priorities. My family is my first priority. There are a lot of writers out there, but I am the only mother to my four children. And I am the only wife to my husband. Those relationships need me, and I need them. In fact, when the writing life becomes overwhelming, I find they are my shelter and one of the things that keep me sane. :)

Second: I don’t procrastinate (at least not a lot). I look ahead a year and know I need to be writing now or else I won’t have my book finished in time. I write for about 2 hours a day and spend an additional hour or two on marketing, blogging, etc…

Thirdly (and most importantly): I pray. I pray about the books I write. I pray for my family. I pray for my publishing company and my fellow authors. I pray for my church. Prayer keeps me connected to God and in tune with what He is telling me (along with reading His word).

To be honest, there is never enough time in a day for everything we want to do: whether you are a writer, have a full time job, or are a stay-at-home mother. I find time to write because God graciously gives me time each day. Knowing what is most important and following what God is telling me helps me balance the calls God has placed on my life.

Reader Question: How about you? Do you find it difficult to balance everything in your life? What do you find helps you?

by Jill Williamson
Published by Zonderkidz

ABOUT THE BOOK

Abby Goyer is forced to move to rural Alaska when her father unexpectedly takes a job in a remote laboratory called Jason Farms. Suspicious of her father’s decisions, she investigates and finds more than what she was looking for when a strange boy shows up at her door. Martyr, one of fifty-five identical clones, escaped from the underground lab at the farm with one wish: to see the sky before he fulfills his purpose and “expires” on his eighteenth birthday. Abby tries to help Martyr see that God has a purpose for his life, one that is different from the one the scientists originally planned for him.

AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR FEATURE AUTHOR

Getting to Know Your Readers
One of my favorite things to do is talk with my readers. I love speaking to teens because it gives me the perfect opportunity to meet my target audience. I have so much fun getting to know students after my presentation, taking pictures with them and asking them what they’re reading now, what their favorite books are, or what the story they are writing is about.

I also enjoy connecting with readers online or via snail mail, though that has a very different feel to it. I’ve had some great conversations through email, cried over letters from readers, and had many laughs on Facebook with people who know me through my books. Even though it’s time consuming, I respond to every message I receive.

My husband is a youth pastor, so this is another way that I get to hang out with my target audience every week. And I know most of these teens really well.

And I’m blessed to have a couple teenage critique partners.

I’ve found that success with my readers is all about building a relationship with them. That might start with my novel or it might start with a kind word in an unlikely place. I met a teenager once at the park when I took my kids swimming. This girl was there as a babysitter. While we watched our kids, I asked her what she was reading and we got to talking about books. Eventually it came out that I was a writer, and she was excited about meeting me.

The key is to start conversations with people, and for those conversations to be successful, you want to ask the other person about her life. If an opportunity arises to mention your book, go for it. If not, trust that loving on someone is all that’s necessary that day. It’s the Dale Carnegie, How to Win Friends and Influence People, mindset. And it works. That shouldn’t be a surprise, though. After all, Jesus said it best: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

If what we all want, deep down, is to be asked about what we are struggling with, how we are really doing, and what we do for a living, then, according to Jesus, those are the questions we need to be asking others.

* * * * *

Thank you, Jill, for sharing with us today.

Guest Question: How do you connect with your readers? Do you speak? Are you more of an online communicator? Or do you meet your readers elsewhere? As a reader, what do you like to see from authors whose books you read? If you were to get to know them, what would be your preferred method or sequence from introduction to relationship?

ENTRY RULES Readers, leave your email address (name at domainname dot com/net) along with your answer to the question for your chance to win a FREE autographed copy of the book featured above. If you do not answer the question, and your email address isn't provided, you will not be entered. And if you don’t like to read teen science fiction, maybe there is a teen in your life who’d like the book.

The contest is open to US/Canada residents only.

Spotlight on Steve Rzasa and The Word Unleashed

Don't forget the new rules of the spotlights here. Random questions will be inserted in each spotlight for you to find and answer in the comments in order to be entered. So, be on the lookout!

And today, I'm pleased to feature an author published by the same company as my husband. Marcher Lord Press is a fantastic science fiction and fantasy publisher that is giving a presence to those authors of amazing stories who couldn't find a place with other traditional houses. The demand is high on the reader end, but most publishers don't take the risk. Jeff Gerke, with Marcher Lord Press, does. If you're a fan of this genre, be sure to check out this publisher for all of the books available.

Question MODIFIED. What other 2 books released along with The Word Unleashed in April 2010 with Marcher Lord Press? The answer is on the main page of the publisher site. :)

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

STEVE RZASA was born and raised in South Jersey, and fell in love with books—especially science fiction novels and historical volumes—at an early age. He and his wife, Carrie, have two boys and live in Buffalo, Wyoming. Steve’s short story, “Rescued,” which is set in the universe of The World Reclaimed, won the 2009 G.K. Chesterton Award in the Athanatos Christian Ministries Writing Contest.

THE WORD UNLEASHED
by Steve Rzasa
Published by Marcher Lord Press

ABOUT THE BOOK

The Word Reclaimed, Book 1 of the Face of the Deep

Baden picked up the wrong book.

In the far future, the civilized worlds have finally been freed of the curse of religion. Tolerance now rules the five colonies.

Thanks to the secret police, no one has been bothered by so much as a hymn in two generations—much less a Torah, Koran, or that most dangerous of books, a Bible.

Baden is a young man with an attitude. He spends his spare time salvaging wrecks in deep space, claiming for himself whatever the pirates leave behind.

One day, Baden finds a book. A strange and very old book, preserved carefully against the ravages of deep space. Thinking he’ll become rich if only for the value of the paper, he takes it. He counts himself lucky beyond all imagining.

Until it begins talking to him.

Amidst an interstellar war that threatens to overthrow the monarchy and drive great families to oblivion, Baden must evade the secret police and their attempts to get that book.

Baden never had much use for religion. But, it seems, one has use of him.

The Word Unleashed, Book 2 of the Face of the Deep

Baden’s book won’t leave him alone.

He’d like nothing more than to get rid of the Bible he found in the wreckage of a derelict starship. It’s brought trouble – the secret police are closing in on him. He’s fighting more with his father. And he fears that the young woman he loves may be falling under the book’s spell.

But he can’t seem to let it go.

Now he’s sharing what he’s read with believers who have awaited the return of God’s Word for decades. His mysterious rescuer, Jason, wants the Bible taken to a safe place.

So now it’s his choice. He can hide it, or proclaim it.

With Kesek in control of the Realm and coming after all its opponents, Baden will have to trust not only in his friends but in a contingent of elite soldiers determined to save the king.

He’ll have to come to grips with the power he has unleashed on the Realm of Five. And that power has plans of its own.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

I came up with the idea for The Word Reclaimed and its sequel, The Word Unleashed, about eight years ago. They were both originally one story called Commissioned. I was fiddling with ideas for a space opera and started thinking about a kid and his dad running their own cargo ship. Not sure why, but it just popped into my head. In any case, I wondered, “What would happen if he found a wrecked ship containing the last known Bible?” It all kind of snowballed from there.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that were theirs and theirs alone?

My personality traits appear in several characters. I tried to apportion some of those emotions out to – for example, sense of humor to a few, faith to a couple, even anger to some. There are a few aspects that are theirs alone. For example, Professor Tara Douglas-Verge’s zeal for freedom is tempered by her disdain for anything religious. And Baden Haczyk’s bitter animosity toward his father is entirely his own trait.

3. If your hero/heroine were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Oh, that’s easy – Rocky Road. Baden’s journey, both physical and spiritual, is a difficult one. There are many obstacles he must overcome, enemies he must face, and decisions he must make.

4. Are there any themes in The Word Unleashed that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the story progressed?

The most blatant theme is the power of God’s Word. The Bible can be a tremendous instrument for change. It is the guide to a relationship with God. I hope to show the reader how it changes people. That is not to say everyone changes in the same way or has the same “Hallelujah!” moment. No, God uses everyone in different ways, according to the abilities He has given them, and the sooner we realize that, the sooner we can accept our place in the body of Christ.

Other themes that arose are the influence of family, both for good and for ill, and the importance of loyalty and friendship. Religious freedom is a theme that came to me late in the development of the original Commissioned manuscript, but one I feel is important nonetheless. I’m not talking watered-down “tolerance” as we know it in our politically-correct society, but true freedom to worship as you please – and proclaim the Gospel as you please.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

The most difficult parts to write were the little bits of budding romance! I’m a guy. It just doesn’t come naturally.

My favorite parts to write were most of the action scenes, which required a great deal of focus. I also had a great time writing every scene involving Detective Chief Inspector Nikolaas Ryke of the king’s secret police force. I poured every bit of anger and hatred I could imagine into one character to see what he would be like. It was a challenge and thoroughly enjoyable to create a guy you love to hate.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

Well, I’m not sure! I’ve got a book that I’ve just started on, based on a short story from The Face of the Deep universe. It involves a Rescue Corps officer getting a new command and taking it on a deep space rescue mission. But that’s in its infancy. So there should be something within a year or so (hopefully!)

Vote for Starfire - ACFW Book Club Selection!

Have you heard of the ACFW Book Club?

It's a great place to interact with authors and other readers of Christian fiction.

I'm here today with a personal favor to ask. My husband's debut novel has been nominated for the ACFW Book Club selection for March 2010 in the Science Fiction category. So many here have heard of his publishing journey and the exciting things happening with his publisher in the science fiction and fantasy realm. Having his book nominated is fantastic, but it would be even greater to see it receive top votes. I and he would be grateful if you would vote for Starfire.

http://tinyurl.com/stustar

If you're not yet a book club member, you can join for FREE!

Feel free to share this post with friends and family too. This is sort of a grass roots, massive effort, to spread the word and garner support for his book. The more votes, the better! Thank you SO much in advance.

YOU Choose the Next Book to Be Published!

Some of you might know that my husband's first book was published through Marcher Lord Press earlier this year. This publisher is a relatively new yet innovative company that is making quite a name for itself right out of the starting gate. The books under its name are top-quality fantasy and science fiction for the Christian readers. Many say "it's about time!" and I couldn't agree more.

Now, continuing in that pattern, MLP is inviting the participation of its readers to choose the next book to be published. Take a look!

Check Out this event from Marcher Lord Press where YOU can have a say in one of the books that will get published in the April 2010 List!

Think of this as an American Idol style contest for novels. ;)

October 19, 2009
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Marcher Lord Press Announces Marcher Lord Select

(Colorado Springs, CO)--Marcher Lord Press, the premier publisher of Christian speculative fiction, today announced the debut of a revolution in fiction acquisitions.

"Marcher Lord Select is American Idol meets book acquisitions,

" says publisher Jeff Gerke. "We're presenting upwards of 40 completed manuscripts and letting 'the people' decide which one should be published."

The contest will proceed in phases, Gerke explains, in each subsequent round of which the voters will receive larger glimpses of the competing manuscripts.

The first phase will consist of no more than the book's title, genre, length, a 20-word premise, and a 100-word back cover copy teaser blurb. Voters will cut the entries from 40 to 20 based on these items alone.

"We want to show authors that getting published involves more than simply writing a great novel," Gerke says. "There are marketing skills to be developed--and you've got to hook the reader with a good premise."

Following rounds will provide voters with a 1-page synopsis, the first 500 words of the book, the first 30 pages of the book, and, in the final round, the first 60 pages of the book.

The manuscript receiving the most votes in the final round will be published by Marcher Lord Press in its Spring 2010 release list.

No portion of any contestant's mss. will be posted online, as MLP works to preserve the non-publication status of all contestants and entries.

Participating entrants have been contacted personally by Marcher Lord Press and are included in Marcher Lord Select by invitation only.

"We're also running a secondary contest," Gerke says. "The 'premise contest' is for those authors who have completed a Christian speculative fiction manuscript that fits within MLP guidelines and who have submitted their proposals to me through the Marcher Lord Press acquisitions portal before October 29, 2009."

The premise contest will allow voters to select the books that sound the best based on a 20-word premise, a 100-word back cover copy teaser blurb, and (possibly) the first 500 words of the book.

The premise contest entrants receiving the top three vote totals will receive priority acquisitions reading by MLP publisher Jeff Gerke.

"It's a way for virtually everyone to play, even those folks who didn't receive an invitation to compete in the primary Marcher Lord Select contest."

The premise contest is open to anyone with a completed Christian speculative fiction manuscript that meets MLP guidelines for length, content, genre, worldview, audience, etc. To enter, authors must complete the acquisitions form found at the Marcher Lord Press site and supply all the components listed below on or before October 29, 2009.

Marcher Lord Select officially begins on November 1, 2009, and runs until completion in January or February 2010. All voting and discussions and Marcher Lord Select activities will take place at The Anomaly forums in the Marcher Lord Select subforum. Free registration is required.

"In order for this to work as we're envisioning," Gerke says, "we need lots and lots of voters. So even if you're not a fan of Christian science fiction or fantasy, I'm sure you love letting your voice be heard about what constitutes good Christian fiction. So come on out and join the fun!"

Marcher Lord Press is a Colorado Springs-based independent publisher producing Christian speculative fiction exclusively. MLP was launched in fall of 2008 and is privately owned. Contact: Jeff Gerke; www.marcherlordpress.com.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Half of Er’Rets is locked beneath an impenetrable shroud. On the side that still sees the sun, two young people struggle to understand the mind-communication abilities thrust upon them. It's called bloodvoicing. Some say it's a gift. One of the newly “gifted” wish it had never come.

Achan has been a slave all his life. When an enigmatic knight offers to train Achan for the Kingsguard, he readily accepts. But his new skills with the sword do not prepare him for the battle raging between the voices in his head.

Vrell Sparrow is not who she seems. She masquerades as a boy to avoid capture by the powerful forces that seek to exploit her. But Vrell feels called to help a young squire who recently discovered his bloodvoicing gift, even if doing so requires her to work with those who could destroy her.

While Achan learns to use his new ability, Vrell struggles to shut hers down. All the voices strive to learn Achan and Vrell's true identities—and a different kind of voice is calling them both.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. This is your debut novel. Congratulations! What gave you the inspiration for this story?

I had a really weird dream. Have you ever wakened from a bizarre dream and thought, “Wow! That would make a great story?” This happened to me once in the middle of the night. So I wrote down the dream and went back to sleep. When morning came, my notes made very little sense. It was a science fiction premise, but there was one aspect to it that I couldn’t stop thinking about. Over time I brainstormed. The premise switched from science fiction to medieval fantasy. I started researching that time period. The more I learned, the more I couldn’t wait to get started writing. The final story turned out nothing like that dream.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that are theirs and theirs alone?

Not much of me influenced these characters. This is the fifth book I’ve written, so I think that I used up all of me on my first few books. :) Both Achan and Vrell are tenacious, which is a trait that I have. Achan rebels more than I ever would. He rebels against injustice despite the punishments he receives and the ongoing threat of death. Achan is a lot braver than I am, too. I probably have more in common with Vrell. She tends to point out injustice, which is something I’m prone to do. She’s also a girl.

3. If one of your characters were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Achan would be Rocky Road, since that’s how his life has been. He is a stray, which is a social rank lower than a slave. Just when he thinks he might find a way out, his life gets more complicated.

4. Are there any themes in If By Darkness Hid that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

That there is only one God and that he is the desire of our hearts. No matter what we face, knowing him will make life more worthwhile. He created us for a purpose. If we want to know our purpose, we must discover him.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

Researching medieval medicine/healing was the hardest. When I really started looking, though, it was fascinating. I know my scenes are much better because of all the research I did.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

To Darkness Fled, Blood of Kings, book 2, should come out in 2010. This story follows Achan and Vrell’s journey together through Darkness to flee Esek’s wrath.
