CFBA Presents Elizabeth Ludwig and No Safe Harbor

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
No Safe Harbor
Bethany House Publishers (October 1, 2012)
by
Elizabeth Ludwig

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Elizabeth Ludwig is an award-winning author whose work has been featured on Novel Journey, the Christian Authors Network, and The Christian Pulse. Her first novel, Where the Truth Lies, which she co-authored with Janelle Mowery, earned her the 2008 IWA Writer of the Year honors. This book was followed in 2009 by “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” part of a Christmas anthology collection called Christmas Homecoming, also from Barbour Publishing.

In 2010, her first full-length historical novel Love Finds You in Calico, California earned Four Stars from the Romantic Times. Books two and three of Elizabeth’s mystery series, Died in the Wool (Barbour Publishing) and Inn Plain Sight (Spyglass Lane), respectively, released in 2011.

Coming in 2012 is Elizabeth’s newest historical series from Bethany House Publishers. No Safe Harbor, the first book in the Edge of Freedom Series, will release in October, with two more books following in 2013 and 2014.

Elizabeth is an accomplished speaker and teacher, and often attends conferences and seminars, where she lectures on editing for fiction writers, crafting effective novel proposals, and conducting successful editor/agent interviews. Her popular literary blog, The Borrowed Book, enjoyed a wide readership in its first full year, with more than 17,000 visitors in 2011. Along with her husband and two children, Elizabeth makes her home in the great state of Texas.

ABOUT THE BOOK

The Thrill of Romantic Suspense Meets the Romance of 1800s America

Lured by a handful of scribbled words across a faded letter, Cara Hamilton sets off from 1896 Ireland on a quest to find the brother she'd thought dead. Her search lands her in America, amidst a houseful of strangers and one man who claims to be a friend--Rourke Walsh.

Despite her brother's warning, Cara decides to trust Rourke and reveals the truth about her purpose in America. But he is not who he claims to be, and as rumors begin to circulate about an underground group of dangerous revolutionaries, Cara's desperation grows. Her questions lead her ever closer to her brother, but they also bring her closer to destruction as Rourke's true intentions come to light.

If you would like to read the first chapter of No Safe Harbor, go HERE.

MY REVIEW

I don't often read romantic suspense. In fact, I can count on less than one hand the number of books I've read in this genre. But when I saw a new novel from Elizabeth set in the 1800s, I had to check it out. Sure glad I did! Of course, I've almost never been disappointed by a novel published by Bethany House, but when it's outside the normal genres I read, it made me slightly cautious. After reading just the first chapter, though, all my concerns faded like the sun setting over the distant mountains.

There aren't many authors who are able to create a strong sense of time and place to the point that you know the story couldn't possibly be set anywhere except its setting. Ludwig delved so intricately into the lives of Cara, Rourke, and Eoghan, and the plight of the Irish, that I felt as if I *were* one of them, struggling in the 1890's against mysterious obstacles and people sending mixed messages. Cara had no idea what she was getting herself into. She only wanted to find her twin brother, whom she thought was dead. But the tale that unfolds is one full of adventure, well-crafted subterfuge, believable danger, unexpected twists and turns, and a development of romance that only God could orchestrate.

If you love romantic suspense or historical novels, you're going to love this book. Don't delay. Pick up your copy today!

MY REVIEW

All right, so I know the author of this book quite well. We go back a number of years, and we've been up into the wee hours of the late night some nights emailing back and forth or chatting on the phone. That being said, I knew I was in for a real treat with this book. Bonnie has a flair for the dramatic, but her real-life quick wit and wicked sense of humor found their way into the main character (Sloane Templeton) in spades! Sloane's poor taste in men and desire to do everything herself without asking for help seemed rather familiar to me (except Bonnie married herself a real gem), but there came a point when I was ready to slap the woman and tell her to call the cops!

Nevertheless, this novel is chock full of likable characters, memorable lines, and a good old-fashioned mystery. I don't normally read mysteries, but this one I had no choice. The author would likely whip me with a wet noodle and string me up if I passed on her book, but no worries. I wasn't coerced in any way. The humor, supporting cast, and great story meld together to produce a fantastic literary delight. For a debut novel, this one is a keeper! You won't be disappointed.

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Chasing the Sun
Barbour Books (March 1, 2012)
by
Tracie Peterson

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Tracie Peterson is the bestselling, award-winning author of more than 85 novels. She received her first book contract in November, 1992 and saw A Place To Belong published in February 1993 with Barbour Publishings' Heartsong Presents. She wrote exclusively with Heartsong for the next two years, receiving their readership's vote for Favorite Author of the Year for three years in a row.

In December, 1995 she signed a contract with Bethany House Publishers to co-write a series with author Judith Pella. Tracie now writes exclusively for Bethany House Publishers.

She teaches writing workshops at a variety of conferences on subjects such as inspirational romance and historical research.

Tracie was awarded the Romantic Times Career Achievement Award for 2007 Inspirational Fiction and her books have won numerous awards for favorite books in a variety of contests.

Making her home in Montana, this Kansas native enjoys spending time with family--especially her three grandchildren--Rainy, Fox and Max. She's active in her church as the Director of Women's Ministries, coordinates a yearly writer's retreat for published authors, and travels, as time permits, to research her books.

ABOUT THE BOOK

When her father disappears in war-torn Mississippi, Hannah Dandridge finds herself responsible not only for her younger siblings but for the ranch her father recently acquired on the Texas plains. Though a marriage of convenience could ease her predicament, she determines to trust God for direction.

Wounded soldier William Barnett returns to his home only to discover that his family's ranch has been seized. Though angry and bitter at this turn of events, he's surprised to discover that it is a beautiful young woman with amazing fortitude who is struggling to keep the place running.

Hannah, desperate for help, and William, desperate to regain his family's land, form an uneasy truce. But nearby Comanche tribes, the arrival of Confederate soldiers, and a persistent suitor all threaten the growing attraction that builds between them. Will they be able to set aside their own dreams and embrace the promise of a future together?

MY REVIEW

I have known Tracie since early in her fiction writing career and became an instant fan after reading some of her books written for the Heartsong Presents line with Barbour Publishing. Thanks to her friendship and encouragement, I went on to sell 12 historical fiction books of my own so far to Barbour. While I can't say I've read every single book of Tracie's, I *have* read a majority of them. Each one is rich with culture, history, strong characters, and a smooth story flow. There are definite favorites, and this latest release will rank somewhat higher than others, but not among the top.

The pacing of the story flowed well, and Tracie took the common story line of single gal with 2 men vying for her affections and made it her own. However, I felt the conflict and tension wasn't as strong as it could have been, and the resolutions came about far too quickly. That being said, where this book excels is with the depiction of the Texas culture during the Civil War or post-war times. There were 3 distinct groups in Texas at this time: those in favor of the south, those in favor of the north, and those opposed to both while pushing for Texas to become its own country again. Tracie's (and her husband's) meticulous research shines through in this story and presents a unique glimpse of the mindset ruling the people of this era.

I'm intrigued enough to read the next in the series, even if only to discover more about the people. Here's hoping the conflict and tension up the ante a bit going forward.

CFBA Presents S. Dionne Moore and Promise Brides

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Promise Brides
Barbour Books (November 1, 2011)
by
S. Dionne Moore

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

S. Dionne Moore resides in South Central PA with her family. She is a weekly contributor to The Borrowed Book where she posts tips on the writing life, recipes, and teaches on various writing-related subjects. In addition to writing cozy mysteries, she pens historical romances that bring strong focus to locales within her region of Pennsylvania as a way of indulging her passion for history. In Fall of 2011 her first of three romances set in Wyoming, A Sheepherder's Song, will release.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Love is the same, no matter when, no matter where—it never comes without sacrifice. Theodore risks capture for Ellie, but will their hope for a future together be defeated? Can Marylu trust Chester, or is she asking for another broken heart? Will Alaina and Jack find common ground, or will flood waters destroy any possible future? Enjoy three romances from the historic state of Pennsylvania.

If you would like to read the first chapter of Promise Brides, go HERE.

MY REVIEW

When I first met Sandra, we were both involved in the local ACFW chapter zone of the Mid-Atlantic states. Or, we might have first met at an ACFW conference. I'm not sure. Wherever it was, it didn't take long for us to form a fast friendship, full of laughter, fun stories, and camaraderie you don't find unless you share it with other writers. Our shared passion for history is another tying link. Since my first series was set in historical Delaware, a neighbor to Pennsylvania (and once 3 colonies belonging to that state), I knew I had to get this book.

And Sandra Moore does an amazing job with the historical detail of all 3 books in this collection. I was swept away by the Johnstown Flood story of Alaina and Jack, intrigued by the escape from slavery story of Marylu and Chester, and tugged into the north/south struggle of the war story of Ellie and Theodore. Each one brought unique facets of the history of Pennsylvania to light, and I read the book in 3 short sittings.

The characters all came to life and brought their unique backstory to the pages. If you're looking for some easy reading with some sweet, yet dedicated, love stories, plus a fun history lesson without feeling like you're in school, check out this book. You won't regret it.

CFBA Presents Tamera Alexander and A Lasting Impression

I'm pleased to feature a good friend and mentor today on my blog, courtesy of the Christian Fiction Blog Alliance. Tammy and I met back in 2002 working the bookstore tables for the national ACFW conference in Kansas City (then ACRW). We still call each other "book table buddies" and share many fond memories of those times. :) She has since gone on to win the Christy and the RITA awards for her outstanding novels. Me? I'm still trying to balance writing with 2 little ones at home and breaking into trade-length. We'll see how it all goes. Without further ado, here's the feature on Tammy.

This week, the

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
A Lasting Impression
Bethany House (November 1, 2011)
by
Tamera Alexander

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Tamera Alexander is the best-selling author of Rekindled, Revealed and Remembered, the critically acclaimed Fountain Creek Chronicles historical series with Bethany House Publishers. Her second historical series, Timber Ridge Reflections (From a Distance, Beyond This Moment, and Within My Heart) continue her signature style of deeply drawn characters, thought-provoking plots, and poignant prose which has earned her devoted readers—and multiple industry awards.

These awards include the 2009 and 2008 Christy Award for Excellence in Christian Fiction, the 2010 and 2007 RITA Award for Best Inspirational Romance, the 2010 and 2007 Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence, the 2010 HOLT Medallion, the 2007 Bookseller’s Best Award, the 2007 National Reader's Choice Award and Library Journal’s Top Christian Fiction for 2006, among others.

Tamera's newest novel A Lasting Impression is the first of a brand new three-book Southern historical series, and the first two chapters are available for review. She's at work on her ninth novel which will release in fall 2012.

After living in Colorado for seventeen years, Tamera has returned to her Southern roots. She and her husband now make their home in Nashville, Tennessee, along with Tamera's father, Doug, and with their two adult children who live near by. And don't forget Jack, their precious--and precocious--silky terrier.

ABOUT THE BOOK

To create something that will last is Claire Laurent's most fervent desire as an artist. It's also her greatest weakness. When her fraud of a father deals her an unexpected hand, Claire is forced to flee from New Orleans to Nashville, only a year after the War Between the States has ended. Claire's path collides with that of Sutton Monroe, and she considers him a godsend for not turning her in to the authorities. But when they meet again and he refuses to come to her aid, she realizes she's sorely misjudged the man. Trading an unwanted destiny for an unknown future, Claire finds herself in the middle of Nashville's elite society and believes her dream of creating a lasting impression in the world of art may finally be within reach.

All that Sutton Monroe holds dear lies in ruin. He's determined to reclaim his heritage and to make the men who murdered his father pay. But what he discovers on his quest for vengeance reveals a truth that may cost him more than he ever imagined.

Set at Nashville's historical Belmont Mansion, a stunning antebellum manor built by Mrs. Adelicia Acklen, the richest woman in America in the 1860s, A Lasting Impression showcases the deep, poignant, unforgettable characters that set Tamera's stories apart and provides an inspiring love story that will capture readers' hearts and leave them eager for more.

If you would like to read the first chapter of A Lasting Impression, go HERE.

MY REVIEW

From the first book she released, and even before she was published, I have loved Tamera Alexander. She made a "lasting impression" on me back in 2002 with her passion for history and her winsome personality. Even when she wasn't sure what would happen of this crazy pursuit, she possessed a charm about her that only shines in each book she writes.

This latest is no different. And in my opinion, it's her best book yet. The rich detail of Nashville's Belmont Mansion, the accurate portrayal of a war-torn South, and the engaging characters reflecting the emotional upheaval following such a destructive war -- all of it is smoothly blended into a compelling story of a daughter running from certain fate and her family, and a son determined to avenge his father's death. Their worlds collide, and with every experience or interaction, you feel you are right there with Claire and Sutton.

Painstaking research and close character study bring this novel to great heights and take you on an exhilarating journey you won't soon forget. The only down side is having to wait for book 2!

Thanks, Tammy!

Thomas Nelson $10,000 contest + free e-book!

From Thomas Nelson:

One of the highlights of our days in the Fiction department at Thomas Nelson? Receiving reader letters—either directly addressed to us or passed along from our talented authors. It’s critical to be reminded that at the end of our long days acquiring, editing, designing, selling, marketing, and publicizing books, those stories are reaching readers, striking nerves, changing lives. We want readers’ feedback. How stories have given you hope. Which authors’ series you can’t help from sharing with everyone you meet. We want to know what makes you stay up late in the night to finish a story, and conversely what turns you away.

We’re conducting a series of surveys—seeking answers from readers who love Christian fiction. Up for grabs is a free e-book for every respondent who completes the survery, as well as a $10,000 prize for one entrant. The responses we gather will help shape the future of the books we publish for years to come. As well as the data we’re collecting here, we’ll also seek more in-depth feedback from a panel we’ll develop over the next year. More details to come. The note below from one of authors gives a specific picture of how reader feedback shapes her work. In short, your opinion matters! We thank you for your time and appreciate your responding.

Dear Friends--

Your opinion matters. It really does. I love hearing from readers about what worked for them in a story and about what doesn’t work. Reader feedback changed the balance between romance and suspense in my novels. After the Rock Harbor trilogy, I wanted to write more suspense in my novels because that’s what I personally like. But readers really wanted more relationship and romance in the books so I moved back that direction to about the same mix of 50/50 that the Rock Harbor novels contained. I write for you even more than for myself.

I had no intention of setting a whole series of books at Bluebird, Texas. It was going to be only one book, but readers sent me requests in droves for more books. The fourth book in the Lonestar series, Lonestar Angel, will be out in October. The Rock Harbor novels were going to be complete at three. There are now five and I’m thinking about another one! All due to reader demand.

I’ve often asked for reader input on names and locations too. When I was struggling for a name for my hero in The Lightkeeper’s Ball, I turned to my readers. Harrison really fit my character, and my readers told me. Love that! When I was trying to decide on a location for the new Hope Beach series I’ve started, I asked readers. Their overwhelming response was for a series set in the Outer Banks so guess what I’m writing?!

That’s why we’re coming to you for answers. We want to give you what you really want! Don’t be afraid to let us know what you really think. We value your honesty and the time it will take to share with us. Looking forward to hearing what you have to say!

Your friend,
Colleen Coble

Dear Friends—

Publishing books is a team effort, and there are a lot of players—authors, editors, cover designers, marketing staff, and a host of other behind-the-scene folks who help get the books on the shelves. And readers are also a large part of the process. Your input matters, probably more than you know.

When I hear from readers, I really listen to what they want. This is particularly true with my series books. For example, Seek Me With All Your Heart (book #1 in the Land of Canaan series) wraps up nicely at the end, but one of my minor characters (Katie Ann) was left pregnant after her husband left her. I received lots of emails about Katie Ann from readers, so book #2 in the series—The Wonder of Your Love—is Katie Ann’s story.

With the popularity of social media resources such as Facebook, it has allowed me to keep in close contact with readers and to seek opinions and advice. Several times, the publisher and I couldn’t decide on a cover, so we posted the cover options on Facebook and let readers decide. And if you’re posting anywhere on my Facebook Fans Page, your name could end up in a book. I often scan the names there, so you are unknowingly helping me just by being on the site.

Readers also made it clear that they wanted books in digital format, large print, and audio versions. Authors and publishers listened, and most (if not all) of my books are available in multiple formats.

As an author, I hope to write entertaining stories that will be enjoyed for many years. As a reader, I have favorite authors, and I’m not afraid to let them know what I want in future books. We listen to the likes and the dislikes in our effort to bring you the best stories we can, so don’t be shy. Tell us what you think!

Warmly,
Beth Wiseman

ABOUT THE BOOK

The future should be bright for Deborah Vandermark, who is now pursuing her interest in medicine alongside Dr. Christopher Clayton, who is courting her. But the lumber town is resistant to the idea of a woman physician, and she feels thwarted at every turn.

A more devastating blow occurs, however, when Christopher breaks off their relationship to return home to his troubled family. Despite her own love life going awry, Deborah is still intent to be a matchmaker for both her widowed mother and her brother, who has caught the eye of the spit-fire daughter of the local pastor.

But what will Deborah do when faced with the truth about Christopher's family? Is there hope for the two of them...or will Jake Wyeth's attentions finally catch Deborah's eye instead?

A WORD FROM THE AUTHOR

Greetings from snowy Montana.

For most of the month of February I was in Texas speaking and signing books. I left Belgrade at -21 degrees on February 9th and arrived in Houston where it was 21 above. It felt like a heat wave. It was a great reminder that all things are subjective.

The book tour was great and people were so kind. I love meeting with folks and enjoy hearing how God used the books to draw them closer to Him.

My Striking a Match series is set in East Texas during the 1880's and deals with the logging industry there. When I first started researching a storyline for Texas, I was amazed by the fact that they had, and still have, a large logging industry. Yellow pine was often overlooked in the early years because it has a high resin content, but as logging industries cleared the country of white pine, it became increasingly important to use yellow pine and Texas was more than happy to deliver.

Saw mill towns sprang up overnight and disappeared just as quickly, but the concepts were often different than those of saw mill towns in other parts of the country. Texas mill towns and logging industries tended to be family focused. In much of the country, loggers were encouraged to be bachelors and live in camps. In Texas the concept of family men being more reliable caused mill owners to encourage family lifestyles.

With few laws in place pertaining to education, saw mill owners would often set up their own schools for worker's children, as well as churches and stores. Workers were encouraged to be well-grounded with the idea being that these "family" men would drink and fight less, be more faithful to show up and earn their living, and be more responsible to the community.

Other issues that drew me to this time period and setting were post-Civil War racial issues, educational problems and the overall picture of life in Texas. The people then, as now, had to be hearty and strong, generous and helpful to one another, as well as firm in their faith. I hope you'll enjoy the series and see for yourself this fascinating slice of Texas frontier life.

MY REVIEW

I've read so many of Tracie's novels, I can begin to predict certain aspects and formulas she employs during her writing. In this book, she inserted a bit more historical and medical knowledge, which I found quite enjoyable. Seeing a heroine struggling against society mores to practice medicine when the woman's place was in the home appealed to me in the same way the TV show, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, did.

And although some might be taken back by the violence or the level of prejudice, or even the "white pride" portrayed, it is very true to the times. It's not easy removing your 21st century ideals and understandings when you read historical novels, but you can't apply them. Otherwise, you risk viewing those people in a far more negative light than is appropriate for the time in which they lived.

That being said, I did find the cast of characters to be in line with most of Tracie's recent novels. The only problem with that is if you haven't read book 1 in this series, you'll likely get lost and confused. References are made, but there isn't enough to clarify some of them. And of course, this book ends with a cliffhanger of sorts that leads into book 3. Depending upon how anxious you are to find out what happens, you might want to wait until book 3 is released, then read all 3 in a row.

All in all, this book is what I've come to expect from Tracie. It's an enjoyable read, and her writing is what you can count on for a comfort read. You know you'll get a thorough, well-researched story.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Bobbie McIntyre dreams of running a ranch of her own. Raised without a mother and having spent most of her time around men, she knows more about wrangling than acting like a lady. The friendship of her new employer awakens a desire to learn more about presenting her feminine side, but ranch life keeps getting in the way.

Ranch owner Jace Kincaid figures the Lord is testing his faith when a female wrangler shows up looking for work. Bobbie has an uncanny way of getting under his skin, though, and he’s surprised when she finds a home next to his heart. But when his cattle begin to go missing and his wranglers are in danger from some low-down cattle thief, can Jace trust God, even if it may mean giving up on his dreams?

MY REVIEW

I was excited to see my friend's book come out, and even moreso when I saw the setting in Colorado. As a resident of this magnificent state, books set here (especially historical) always appeal to me. I love reading how different authors cover the amazing history of Colorado. I am also a sucker for a good western, and this book has it!

It's a fast-paced book with action that never stops. Bobbie is shoved off a cliff, held at gunpoint, and accused of bank robbery. Talk about exciting! Throw in ranch troubles, a cowboy who isn't looking for love, and a persistent heroine who can out-shoot, out-ride, and out-wrangle any cowpoke on the ranch, and you've got an action/adventure worth reading. But hold on tight, because you're going to be taken on a wild ride. Amazing to see a heroine who wears pants and straps a gun to her hip. :)

Janelle was one of my first readers back when I began my publishing career. Her encouragement went a long way toward helping me keep moving forward. I love being able to read and review one of her new books, and I'm happy to support her in any way I can. Of course, with her skill in writing both the action and the romance, it's easy to lend my support.

MY REVIEW

As soon as this book arrived in my mailbox, I eagerly tore open the envelope and set the book on the nightstand, anticipating the start that evening at bedtime. With a toddler and a new baby on the way, plus my own writing deadlines, nighttime is the only "free" time I have...much to my chagrin. But, I knew any book by Julie Klassen was a MUST HAVE. Ever since we met at an ACFW Conference in Minneapolis and sat next to each other at lunch, I was excited about her books. And like her others before this one, I was not disappointed. Julie is a Christy-award winner and RITA award finalist. And with substantial reason.

It was almost a guilty pleasure turning the pages and reading each chapter. I wish I could have stayed up on all night, but alas, duty calls, and it took me about a week to finish. Since becoming an author myself, I confess to becoming much pickier in regard to which books I read and my opinions or reviews of them. Julie has yet to disappoint. And considering she works for Bethany House, I have a feeling she never will. She has her finger on the pulsepoint of what readers AND writers love. What an excellent example of top-notch storyline, characters, and plot, all rolled into one enticing package.

To top all this, the book was filled with quotes from books by Jane Austen. And what fan of historical fiction could NOT love that? The references lent an air of familiarity to the book and made me feel like I was holding a long-lost treasure in my hands, instead of a brand new book.

This book is a true delight, and I recommend it wholeheartedly to any fan of historical fiction, but more specifically to any fan of the Regency era. Julie has captured this era with such skill, you'd think she lived during those times. :) This read was quite a treat.

Within My Heart (Timber Ridge Reflections, Book 3)
by Tamera Alexander
Published by Bethany House

ABOUT THE BOOK

Determined to fulfill her late husband’s dream, Rachel Boyd struggles to keep her ranch afloat with the help of her two young sons. But some days it feels as though her every effort is sabotaged. When faced with a loss she cannot afford, she’s forced to trust Rand Brookston, the one man in Timber Ridge she wishes to avoid. And with good reason. He’s a physician, just like her father, which tells her everything she needs to know about him. Or so she thinks . . .

Dr. Rand Brookston ventured west with the dream of bringing modern medicine to the wilds of the Colorado Rockies, but the townspeople have been slow to trust him. Just as slow in coming is Rand’s dream to build the town a proper clinic. When a patient’s life is threatened, Rand makes a choice—one that sends ripples through the town of Timber Ridge. And through Rachel Boyd’s stubborn heart.

From the beloved, bestselling author of From a Distance and Beyond This Moment comes an unforgettable story about faith in the face of fear, about tarnished hopes and second chances, and ultimately about the resilient courage and tenacity of hearts broken––and mended––by love.

MY REVIEW

Within My Heart is not one of those historicals where you've got a Snidely type character with a handlebar mustache, plotting to tie up the heroine on the railroad track in an attempt to lure the hero into a trap. Instead, until the very end of this book, the tension and high drama are fairly low on the overall scale.

This is one of those historicals where if you're looking for emotion, real characters, and a story that resonates with you long after you finish reading the last page, you'll find it here! You'll read about love, loss, and finding love and life again. The punch of this book takes you by surprise with vivid descriptions and easy-going characters that relax you as the real story is revealed. Then, wham! Tammy throws this amazing emotional punch that sends your head spinning. But what a punch it is! It touches you deep to the core.

And if that isn't enough, you get done only to read a heartfelt, emotional, letter from Tammy, where she shares her own personal story. Sucker-punched yet again! It isn't often that an author is humble enough to open up to readers all around the world in this manner, but her honesty is both touching and inspiring.

I know I'm only cruising for a bruising by reading tear-jerkers like this one while I'm pregnant and have emotions raging, but it was worth it! I'd to it again in a heartbeat...and with Tammy, I know I'll never be disappointed.

MY REVIEW

From the first words spoken, I was whisked away into a world of teeny-boppers, singing sensations, rock-n-roll, poodle skirts, and saddle oxfords. While I wasn't lucky enough to have lived during this truly delightful and fun time, my parents were, and they raised me listening to what is now termed "Golden Oldies." As if music like this could ever become "old"!

As soon as I heard of this new line from Summerside and saw Janice was one of its newest authors, I had to snag me a copy. And Janice doesn't disappoint. Every nuance, detail, and word is meticulously intertwined to provide you a story of fun and a reminder of why you should always "let the good times roll." And Sweet Sal's Soda Shoppe is a wonderful bonus! The simplicity and purity of the times is an appeal that Janice handles perfectly from beginning to satisfying end.

If you want to take a trip down memory lane and relive the rockin' good times of the 1950's, pick up a copy of Love Me Tender by Janice Hanna. I give it 5 out of 5 musical stars! And I loved how the story showed God using even Hollywood to broadcast His message across the AM radio airwaves.

CFBA Blog Tour - Tracie Peterson and Twilight's Serenade

I'm thrilled beyond words to be able to feature today's author and the 3rd book in her latest Alaska series. Tracie has been instrumental in my own publishing career, with her husband having been the acquisitions editor to acquire my first novel. From our email exchanges in the late 1990's, she fast became a woman I admire, and to this day, she remains a good friend and mentor.

Happy reading!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

TRACIE PETERSON is the bestselling, award-winning author of more than 85 novels.

She received her first book contract in November 1992, and saw A Place To Belong published in February 1993 with Barbour Publishings' Heartsong Presents. She wrote exclusively with Heartsong for the next two years, receiving their readership's vote for Favorite Author of the Year for three years in a row.

In December 1995, she signed a contract with Bethany House Publishers to co-write a series with author Judith Pella. Tracie now writes exclusively for Bethany House Publishers.

MY REVIEW

This is the third book in this Song of Alaska series. While I can't say this is among my favorites of Tracie's books, I can say Tracie does a terrific job getting first time readers up to speed on the history. Yuri's change of heart seemed rather quick, since it happened near the beginning of the book, and the inclusion of Marston was excellent. Britta is a fantastic heroine, fierce in her love, devoted to her family, and with an enormous amount of heart. One warning, there IS a devastating twist thrown in that will likely break your heart. Still, it's a satisfying conclusion to a epic story about the Lindquist family that ends with everyone happily ever after.

Looking forward to your new series on the Texas family, Tracie. Thanks for the years of reading pleasure.

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT

1. This is the final book in your latest Alaska series. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

Inspiration to write this book came from the characters in the story. I felt that Britta's unrequited love story had to be told, and I wanted to bring back troublesome characters from the past to show that some people never change. All sorts of things were changing in the location of Sitka during 1906 time period and those issues and concerns lent themselves nicely to the story as well.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that are theirs and theirs alone?

One of the issues in this story series was about letting go of the past and forgiving. There were things that were purposefully done to Lydia for instance and she had to learn to let go of her fears and anger over those things in order to have the future God wanted for her. That's a lesson I've had to learn myself. However, there was also the issue of Britta's love for Yuri. A love that had driven her and molded her since she was a small girl. That's not been something that I've experienced, but I've seen it happen in the lives of others and found it amazingly powerful.

3. If your hero and/or heroine was an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Britta would be Caramel, Fudge Ripple. She appears calmly vanilla - sweet and simple, but underlying that facade are rivers of caramel and fudge that liven up the pretense of simplistic calm.

4. What themes exist in Twilight's Serenade that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as your story unfolded?

Throughout the book, Britta's character deals with one seemingly impossible situation after another. Not the least of which is her love for a man who first of all is headed on a self-destruct path, and second - is married. Britta is an honorable young woman and she tries her best to let go of this deep love and focus on what God has for her. But it always seems to come full circle that the delight of her heart - her passion and longing - are the very things God has put there for her.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

Probably the most difficult was daling realistically with Lydia and Marston and the issues of forgiving the past. I didn't want it to seem trite or easy, because we all know that forgiveness is sometimes very hard. I wanted to show that this was a situation of growth for Lydia's character, while Marston was the same old ugly, heartless man he'd always been. My favorite - putting Yuri and Britta together.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

My new series STRIKING A MATCH comes out in late September 2010. Book one is titled EMBERS OF LOVE and starts readers on a massive saga dealing with the Vandermark family. Set in East Texas in the 1880's, this series will focus on the logging industry of the area. I chose it because one doesn't usually think "logging" when they think Texas, but yellow pine was and continues to be a strong industry for Texas. The focal character for this series is Deborah Vandermark - a remarkable young woman who is educated in a time when female education is frowned upon. She has a passion and love of life and her family, God and Texas - but despite this she finds herself longing for more. I hope everyone gets a chance to join us on the adventure.

She now has a B.S. in Psychology through Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. Getting her degree is a huge triumph for both her and her family--they survived!

MY REVIEW

I thought Ronie's debut novel, Dead Reckoning, was amazing, but I had no idea the treasure that awaited me tucked within the pages of Ronie's second novel, Nightshade. What a fantastic debut to her Discarded Heroes series. The jungle came alive, the covert operations took me right along with them, and the action blended with the romance in perfect unison.

Vibrant, full of adventure, emotion, and real life, and featuring enough surprises to keep you turning pages all night long. If you're looking for a book to help you sleep, don't pick up this one. You're in for a long, sleepless night with Nightshade. But you won't regret it for one minute. In fact, you'll close the back cover and wish you had the sequel right beside you.

Ronie, you've done an amazing job! Keep it up, girl.

CFBA Blog Tour - Cara Putman and Stars in the Night

Don't forget the rules of the spotlights here. A random question will be inserted in each spotlight for you to answer in the comments in order to be entered. So, be on the lookout!

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Stars in the Night
Summerside Press
by Cara Putman

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

CARA PUTMAN graduated from high school at sixteen, college at 20, and completed her law degree when she was 27. Her writing journey started in 2005 when she decided to write her first novel. Now she has eleven books published with more on the way.

From Cara: People say I've accomplished a lot and that I must have life by the proverbial tail. Hardly! I grew up as a home schooled kid when home schoolers were misunderstood and oddities.

I struggle with balancing my writing and law career, plus being a good mom and wife.

I often fear people won't like my books.

I've walked through the deep pain of miscarriage.

Really, I'm just like you – I don't have it all together and have gone through tough times. But in His strength, I've discovered a strength I never knew I had. A strength I want you to discover too.

In the end I'm just an ordinary mom who has seen God do some wonderful things as I've been obedient to step into the calling He's led me into.

Stars in the Night Background

Stars in the Night was an idea that had begun to percolate in my mind. I’d written two World War II series and was actively looking for my next setting. My husband, a huge World War II history buff, and I were kicking ideas around, and I’d decided Hollywood was probably the next place for me. I’d gone to the library and gotten a stack of research books when I got the call. An editor I knew but had never worked with wanted to know if I might be interested in a new line they were starting. As we talked, I got so excited. And then she emailed me their guidelines, which listed that Hollywood was a location they were interested in setting books.

Only God could have known ahead of time. But because I followed His prompting I was ready to run with an idea. Stars in the Night is the result.

STARS IN THE NIGHT
by Cara Putman
Published by Summerside Press

ABOUT THE BOOK

Hollywood 1942. When attorney Audra Schaeffer's sister disappears, Audra flies to Hollywood to find her.

Any day Audra might have been flattered by the friendly overtures of Robert Garfield, a real-life movie star. But on the flight from Indianapolis to Hollywood, Audra can think of little else than finding her missing sister. When Audra arrives in the city of glitz and glamour, and stars, and learns her rising starlet sister has been murdered, all thoughts of romance fly away.

Determined to bring the killer to justice, Audra takes a job with the second Hollywood Victory Caravan.

Together with Robert Garfield and other stars, she crisscrosses the southern United States in a campaign to sell war bonds. When two other women are found dead on the train, Audra knows the deaths are tied to that of her sister.

Could the killer be the man with whom she's falling in love?

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

I was working on the last book for my second World War II series for Heartsong Presents and beginning to think about where I might want to set a future series. My husband, who is as big a World War II fan as I am if not more, and I were brainstorming one night. Since I’d done two series set in the Midwest, I kind of wanted to branch out, and I’ve long had a love of classic movies. As Eric and I were talking, we hit on the idea of Hollywood during World War II.

There were so many different roles that the stars played during the war. Canteens. USO tours. Active service. 4-Fed. The plot options and historical details seemed endless. Then as I researched I stumbled on the original Hollywood Victory Caravan. My imagination kicked into overdrive. What if I created a second Victory Caravan? What if a killer followed someone on to the train? What if people died and you were trapped on the train with a killer? And what if romance blossomed in the midst of the suspense? I got pretty pumped very quickly.

Then I got a call from the woman who became my editor at Summerside. She wondered if I might be interested in writing historical romantic suspense for them. And as God works, one of the settings they were interested in was Hollywood. It was perfect timing and a great fit.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that are theirs and theirs alone?

Audra, the heroine, is an attorney trying to actually be able to practice law in 1942 Indiana. So there were definite aspects of my experience with law school and as an attorney that played into it. But I’ve never lost a sibling and I’ve never had to outsmart a killer.

Robert, the hero, is a Hollywood actor who’s star is on the rise. But he’s had his heart broken by following the studio system of Hollywood. Now, in 1942 that divorce has made him questionable husband material. And Audra wonders if he could really be interested in her when he’s surrounded by starlets. But he is a genuinely good guy trying to move past his mistakes. I’d like to think that’s me, too, though I’ve never been divorced.

3. If your hero and/or heroine was an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Tiff, what a fun question! Audra would be something like an orange or raspberry sorbet. Refreshing, a bit offbeat, but still not terribly flashy. Robert would be a rich deep chocolate that matches his eyes. :)

4. What themes exist in Stars in the Night that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as your story unfolded?

When I started Stars in the Night I knew that grief would have some role. But I thought it would be minor. But as I wrote I discovered that Audra had to deal with the grief and find she was stronger than she thought. She should have known it since she tackled a very non-traditional career choice, but I think that’s often how we live. We often live in fear of a certain thing or event. “God, I can endure anything, but don’t make me experience XX.” Beth Moore talks about this in one of her videos with the Esther series. And it really struck me. If we’ll let Him, God wants to walk us through that most-horrible what-if scenario, walk us all the way to the end of the road and let us discover if whatever that is really will kill us or be the end of us. Often, I think if we’ll allow ourselves to be led through all the what-ifs to the end, we’ll find it may not be fun, it may not be our first choice, but if we truly trust God we will fall on Him and He will put us back together. It’s certainly held true for me. And that’s a bit of what Audra experiences.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

The hardest scene to write was one that I didn’t originally plan. But as first readers read the book, they pointed out a scene I’d skipped. I didn’t want to travel with Audra to the full depth of her grief over her sister. But there’s one scene on the train where the hero helps her admit her grief and holds her. I’m not a crier, but boy did that scene get me. And don’t worry – grief really doesn’t dominate the story!

My favorite scenes to write involved the Hollywood Victory Caravan shows themselves. Creating the stars who took part on the tour and then watching their personalities and styles develop as they whirled on and off the stage was such fun. Let me tell you, there are some real characters on that tour!

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

My next book is book four in Guideposts next mystery series. I’m one of six authors writing the series and it’s a contemporary set in the Berkshire area of Massachusetts. It releases in September, and I’m currently writing book ten in that series which will release in spring 2011.

Drawing Entry Bonus Question from Cara: I absolutely love classic Hollywood, so what's your favorite classic movie? I'll play along and answer this too.

My favorite classic series is the six movie Thin Man series. We’ve even got our kids hooked on them now. They’ve got a fun slapstick element as Nick and Nora set out to solve various murders. I love the chemistry between William Powell and Myrna Loy. And I marvel that the first movie was filmed in about two weeks’ time.

My favorite romance is either It Happened One Night or You Can’t Take It with You. It Happened One Night is a romantic comedy with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert that lands on a lot of best movies of all times lists. And there’s nothing like when the wall of Jericho comes down at the end. You Can’t Take It with You is a delightful Jimmy Stewart and Jean Arthur romance that is overflowing with a rich supporting cast of eccentric characters and such strong Christian themes. I love that movie.

I’d love to know your favorite classic movies since I’m starting to review the great classics on my blog.
