Welcome Janice Thompson and What Would God Have Us Do?

Please interact with our guest authors by answering the question they provide.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

JANICE HANNA THOMPSON is the author of over sixty books for the Christian market. She writes for Revell, Summerside and Barbour. Janice plans to spend as much of 2011 on her knees as she possibly can.

AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR FEATURE AUTHOR

2011: What Would God Have us Do?
By Janice Thompson

Janice Hanna Thompson here. Let me start by saying “Thank you” to Tiff for having me on her blog. What a dear friend you’ve been over the years, sweet girl! (*note from Tiff - You've been an inspiration

I want to spend a few minutes conveying something the Lord has laid on my heart for 2011. I shared this teaching at our local ACFW group five weeks ago and our members gave it a hearty “Amen!” Think about the number “2” in 2011. As I consider that number, I see a picture of a believer on his/her knees, bowed in reverence.

Bowing (physically or emotionally) is an act of reverence: a feeling or attitude of deep respect tinged with awe; veneration. (We’re not revering those who can help our career along, or even the readers who buy our books. We’re not revering our stories, books ideas, or even our talents. We revere only one…God.)

Psalm 95:6 We’re taught that bowing is a natural posture for the believer: O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before Jehovah our maker.

So, what does it mean to bow the knee?
  • To submit to God’s will, not our own. (Can we do this with our writing in 2011?)
  • It is a sign of respect. (In many countries people kneel before a king.) It’s time to stop talking about God in such a glib way. We’ve got to be careful how we use his name or talk about him.
  • Bowing the knee means we’re humbled, not looking out for our own interests, but for God’s.
  • Bowing is uncomfortable. It doesn’t come naturally. It’s not like sitting on our rears on the sofa, watching TV and eating potato chips. It’s not what we do to relax. It’s what we do – in spite of bad knees and arthritic hip joints.
  • When we’re bowed, we’re not trying to plan anything, manipulate anything or fix anything. (It’s hard to plot a book in a bowed position, isn’t it!)
  • There’s an old worship song: We fall down, we lay our crowns (anything we hope to gain) at the feet of Jesus. The greatness of His mercy and love at the feet of Jesus. Think about the wise men, bowing before the baby Jesus, giving him gold, frankincense and myrrh. That’s the posture we need to assume when we offer our books, stories, articles, and so on. All good gifts are given from God, and we cast them back at his feet, humbled that He was even willing to use us in the first place.

Final Note on bowing in reverence: If your career feels stuck, if you’re disgruntled because you’re not seeing the results you’d hoped for, assume the posture. Don’t cry out, “why me?” Instead, cry out praises.

Think about the number “0” in 2011. When I think of this number, I see a mouth open in awe of the things God has done.

We’re keenly aware that God’s ways are above our ways. . .even with our writing. We’re so limited by our finite thinking but He has plans that FAR exceed anything we could come up with. (Think about that for a moment as it pertains to your writing!) QUESTION: Are we truly awed by the everyday things in our writing life?

When we sit to write and words actually come? When the creative spark burns into flame. We need to stand in complete and total awe that the God of the universe chooses to speak to us, (and through us), in any small way. In 2011 we must begin to acknowledge His holiness, his vastness.

Psalm 65:8 The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, you call forth songs of joy. (The only way to understand his holiness is to spend time with him in worship. Writers must first be worshipers. If you’re not a worshiper, don’t write.)

As finite mortals, powered by flesh and imagination alone, we can do NO justice to a holy God through our writing. ONLY when we come to Him, bowed in reverence, handing our pens to Him and allowing Him to write through us can we describe His beauty, can we share what we do not fully understand, can we capture his magnificence and reveal His heart to our readers. It’s the breath of the Holy Spirit, stirring the waters, like in Genesis.

And – just as we would have marveled as we watched the world being spun into existence – we must marvel at the fact that He chooses to use us! If we’re not awed by Him, our readers won’t be, either. And if we’re trying to write in our own strength, we won’t truly represent Him through our mere words, no matter how hard we try, no matter how extensive our vocabulary. How could we possibly write “the divine” if we’ve not tasted of it?

Now think about the “11” in 2011. I see a picture of a person standing with both arms extended. We are called to surrender ourselves to His will.

Psalm 141:2 May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.

Writers are worker bees. We’re blogging, marketing, networking, writing, learning, developing characters, plotting and so on. And those are all good things. But there comes a time when you’ve got to acknowledge that your strength, even on the best day, is not good enough. We serve a hands-off God, (meaning, He wants us to know that sometimes we have to let go…and let God).

Think of your toddler, running to you, arms extended. What’s your first instinct? To sweep him into your arms. Same thing with Daddy God. When you’re tired, when the stories won’t come, when you’ve lost your way, put those arms up in the air and watch Him lift you above your circumstances.

NOTE: If our plans aren’t surrendered to him, they’re just plans. If those dreams aren’t fully released into His hands, they’re just unfulfilled dreams.

CORPORATE PRAYER FOR 2011 (Please feel free to share this.)
In 2011 I submit my life and my work to a holy God, bowing before Him in reverence and casting all of my gifts, talents, and abilities at His feet. I’m prepared to be awed by the things He does in and through me (and my writing), but recognize that I must surrender so that He can take control. Lord, show me how to do what you’ve called me to do with heart bowed and hands extended. I can’t wait to see what you’ve got for me in this new year. May every bit of praise, honor and glory go to You, Lord. Amen.

* * * * *

Thank you, Janice, for sharing with us today.

Guest Question: What is one way you submit your work to God, whether it be writing, keeping house, tending to your children, being at a place outside the home, or any other work? Feel free to share more than one if you have it.

LOVE FINDS YOU UNDER THE MISTLETOE
by Irene Brand and Anita Higman
Published by Summerside Press

ABOUT THE BOOK

Appalachian Christmas by Irene Brand

When there was no response, David called loudly, "Mr. Walden, it's David Armstrong. I must speak to you."
Julia didn't hear a sound until the hinges squeaked slightly and the door opened about five inches.
"What do you want? a man muttered in a harsh, raw voice.
"I have someone who wants to talk to you," David said, gesturing for Julia to come to his side.
On trembling legs, she stepped forward and took her sleeping nephew from David's arms. She shook Bobby gently to awaken him. The waning twilight revealed a white-haired, whiskered man with a vicious expression on the stony mask of his face.
"Mr. Walden, I'm Julia Mayfield. My sister was married to your son, Robert," she explained in a shaky voice. "She died two years ago when their son was a month old. Her deathbed wish was for me to bring your grandson to meet you." She thrust her nephew closer to the screen door. "This is Bobby."
The old man gasped, and a keening wail escaped his lips. "Go away, go away!" he shouted. "You lie. I'll kill you if you ever come here again. I'll kill you." Wailing like a banshee, he slammed the door, and a key turned in the lock.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

Anita: The idea for Once Upon a Christmas Eve may have started with my interest in the fairy archetype. I loved the movies Cold Comfort Farm and Chocolat for that very reason. There was something enchanting about those two heroines as they whirled around, fixing people’s lives. I gave my main character, Holly Goodnight, some similar fanciful qualities.

Irene: I'm a retired history teacher, and I built many of my teaching segments around United States wars. As a child, I knew many World War II veterans, and I've always been interested in that part of United States history. One young soldier from our community was killed in the war, and his mother became a recluse for years. She turned her back on God. A cousin of mine served in the War and he sent gift items to me from all over the world. As for inspiration, I was motivated by the different veterans and how they reacted to their war experiences.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that were theirs and theirs alone?

Anita: I’m not sure of the percentage, but yes, my own personal experiences as well as my own personality traits definitely make it into my work. Just to use one character as an example, Van Keaton suffered with some unique issues in the story, and they did come from some of my own struggles. But Van had a slightly arrogant side to him too, and I pray that’s not me. I hope I’ve successfully stamped out that part of my personality!

Irene: I don't intend to use any of my personal experiences, such as love affairs or conflicts, in my story. However, as I've stated in the first question, my memories of the post war experiences influenced my attitudes and thoughts. I make an effort to never put myself into the life of a character. So each character is a fictitious person.

3. If your hero/heroine were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Anita: Holly Goodnight would be licorice ice cream. (And yes, that flavor does exist). It’s a jazzy flavor that says, “I’m not afraid to be different!”

Irene: I'd choose strawberry. For one thing, my hero raised strawberries for a cash crop and sold them in nearby cities. And wild strawberries grow in most parts of the Appalachian region.

4. Are there any themes in your story in Love Finds You Under the Mistletoe that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the story progressed?

Anita: The primary theme was, “No matter how impossible circumstances look, God can work all things for good.” Any other story themes revolve around that one. Just as a side note, I don’t usually set out with certain themes in mind. They usually rise up on their own.

Irene: Love overcomes all difficulties which would keep a couple from planning a life together. Despite the bad reputation that many Appalachian communities have of poverty, illiteracy and similar problems, the people, in general, are intelligent, warm-hearted, and devoted to God. An impressive number of Kentucky men and women served in World War II.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

Anita: When I first started writing my story within Love Finds You Under the Mistletoe I was having trouble getting a feel for the characters. In fact, it was really tripping me up! So, I had to just keep writing and writing and writing to figure out who they were. Once I knew them, really knew them, I could soar. My favorite part is when my fingers can finally feel like they’re flying.

Irene: The most difficult part is the first draft. I have to drive myself to finish the story background. I love to edit and would find something to change if I read the manuscript a hundred times. I loved doing local research for this book.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

Anita: I have four books coming out in the next two years, and one of them is a novel entitled, Another Grave Matter. It will be released January, 2012. It’s an inspirational gothic mystery with some comedy. This novel will finish out The Volstead Manor Series.

Irene: I don't have a contract for another book, as yet, but I have several manuscripts being circulated by my agent. Watch my website for future publications. www.irenebrand.com.

MY REVIEW

From the first words spoken, I was whisked away into a world of teeny-boppers, singing sensations, rock-n-roll, poodle skirts, and saddle oxfords. While I wasn't lucky enough to have lived during this truly delightful and fun time, my parents were, and they raised me listening to what is now termed "Golden Oldies." As if music like this could ever become "old"!

As soon as I heard of this new line from Summerside and saw Janice was one of its newest authors, I had to snag me a copy. And Janice doesn't disappoint. Every nuance, detail, and word is meticulously intertwined to provide you a story of fun and a reminder of why you should always "let the good times roll." And Sweet Sal's Soda Shoppe is a wonderful bonus! The simplicity and purity of the times is an appeal that Janice handles perfectly from beginning to satisfying end.

If you want to take a trip down memory lane and relive the rockin' good times of the 1950's, pick up a copy of Love Me Tender by Janice Hanna. I give it 5 out of 5 musical stars! And I loved how the story showed God using even Hollywood to broadcast His message across the AM radio airwaves.

Love Finds You in Victory Heights, Washington

ABOUT THE BOOK

The Second World War has stolen Rosalie's fiance from her. But rather than wallow, Rosalie throws herself into her work at the Boeing plant in Victory Heights, shooting rivets into the B-17 bombers that will destroy the enemy. A local reporter dubs her Seattle's Own Rosie the Riveter, and her story lends inspiration to women across the country. While Rosalie's strong arms can bear the weight of this new responsibility, her heart cannot handle the intense feelings that begin to surface for Kenny, the handsome reporter. Fear of a second heartbreak is a powerful opponent - but will it claim victory over love?

MY REVIEW

Love Finds You in Victory Heights, Washington was like a walk down memory lane!
I spent a lot of time in my younger years sitting at my grandfather's knee, listening to stories of the war, the home effort, and so much that happened during World War II. This book took me back to those days and made me feel like I was right there, living alongside those who gave of their time and their talents to help out the war right from their own back yards.
As an historical fiction author, I'm a stickler for historical details. It will yank me right out of a story if there are lapses or obvious details that don't jive. Not so with this book. The authors nailed everything on the head and blended the details into the story seamlessly.

The sweet romance of Kenny and Rosalie spoke to my heart on many levels, and the subtle message of faith only strengthened the romance. Readers who struggle with truly trusting God and finding their worth in Him will gain a lot from this book. And those who love war stories won't be disappointed in the least.

And just wait until you meet Miss Tilly. What a gal!

Great work, Tricia and Ocieanna. Another winner from your combined efforts.

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Stars in the Night
Summerside Press
by Cara Putman

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

CARA PUTMAN graduated from high school at sixteen, college at 20, and completed her law degree when she was 27. Her writing journey started in 2005 when she decided to write her first novel. Now she has eleven books published with more on the way.

From Cara: People say I've accomplished a lot and that I must have life by the proverbial tail. Hardly! I grew up as a home schooled kid when home schoolers were misunderstood and oddities.

I struggle with balancing my writing and law career, plus being a good mom and wife.

I often fear people won't like my books.

I've walked through the deep pain of miscarriage.

Really, I'm just like you – I don't have it all together and have gone through tough times. But in His strength, I've discovered a strength I never knew I had. A strength I want you to discover too.

In the end I'm just an ordinary mom who has seen God do some wonderful things as I've been obedient to step into the calling He's led me into.

Stars in the Night Background

Stars in the Night was an idea that had begun to percolate in my mind. I’d written two World War II series and was actively looking for my next setting. My husband, a huge World War II history buff, and I were kicking ideas around, and I’d decided Hollywood was probably the next place for me. I’d gone to the library and gotten a stack of research books when I got the call. An editor I knew but had never worked with wanted to know if I might be interested in a new line they were starting. As we talked, I got so excited. And then she emailed me their guidelines, which listed that Hollywood was a location they were interested in setting books.

Only God could have known ahead of time. But because I followed His prompting I was ready to run with an idea. Stars in the Night is the result.

STARS IN THE NIGHT
by Cara Putman
Published by Summerside Press

ABOUT THE BOOK

Hollywood 1942. When attorney Audra Schaeffer's sister disappears, Audra flies to Hollywood to find her.

Any day Audra might have been flattered by the friendly overtures of Robert Garfield, a real-life movie star. But on the flight from Indianapolis to Hollywood, Audra can think of little else than finding her missing sister. When Audra arrives in the city of glitz and glamour, and stars, and learns her rising starlet sister has been murdered, all thoughts of romance fly away.

Determined to bring the killer to justice, Audra takes a job with the second Hollywood Victory Caravan.

Together with Robert Garfield and other stars, she crisscrosses the southern United States in a campaign to sell war bonds. When two other women are found dead on the train, Audra knows the deaths are tied to that of her sister.

Could the killer be the man with whom she's falling in love?

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

I was working on the last book for my second World War II series for Heartsong Presents and beginning to think about where I might want to set a future series. My husband, who is as big a World War II fan as I am if not more, and I were brainstorming one night. Since I’d done two series set in the Midwest, I kind of wanted to branch out, and I’ve long had a love of classic movies. As Eric and I were talking, we hit on the idea of Hollywood during World War II.

There were so many different roles that the stars played during the war. Canteens. USO tours. Active service. 4-Fed. The plot options and historical details seemed endless. Then as I researched I stumbled on the original Hollywood Victory Caravan. My imagination kicked into overdrive. What if I created a second Victory Caravan? What if a killer followed someone on to the train? What if people died and you were trapped on the train with a killer? And what if romance blossomed in the midst of the suspense? I got pretty pumped very quickly.

Then I got a call from the woman who became my editor at Summerside. She wondered if I might be interested in writing historical romantic suspense for them. And as God works, one of the settings they were interested in was Hollywood. It was perfect timing and a great fit.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that are theirs and theirs alone?

Audra, the heroine, is an attorney trying to actually be able to practice law in 1942 Indiana. So there were definite aspects of my experience with law school and as an attorney that played into it. But I’ve never lost a sibling and I’ve never had to outsmart a killer.

Robert, the hero, is a Hollywood actor who’s star is on the rise. But he’s had his heart broken by following the studio system of Hollywood. Now, in 1942 that divorce has made him questionable husband material. And Audra wonders if he could really be interested in her when he’s surrounded by starlets. But he is a genuinely good guy trying to move past his mistakes. I’d like to think that’s me, too, though I’ve never been divorced.

3. If your hero and/or heroine was an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Tiff, what a fun question! Audra would be something like an orange or raspberry sorbet. Refreshing, a bit offbeat, but still not terribly flashy. Robert would be a rich deep chocolate that matches his eyes. :)

4. What themes exist in Stars in the Night that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as your story unfolded?

When I started Stars in the Night I knew that grief would have some role. But I thought it would be minor. But as I wrote I discovered that Audra had to deal with the grief and find she was stronger than she thought. She should have known it since she tackled a very non-traditional career choice, but I think that’s often how we live. We often live in fear of a certain thing or event. “God, I can endure anything, but don’t make me experience XX.” Beth Moore talks about this in one of her videos with the Esther series. And it really struck me. If we’ll let Him, God wants to walk us through that most-horrible what-if scenario, walk us all the way to the end of the road and let us discover if whatever that is really will kill us or be the end of us. Often, I think if we’ll allow ourselves to be led through all the what-ifs to the end, we’ll find it may not be fun, it may not be our first choice, but if we truly trust God we will fall on Him and He will put us back together. It’s certainly held true for me. And that’s a bit of what Audra experiences.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

The hardest scene to write was one that I didn’t originally plan. But as first readers read the book, they pointed out a scene I’d skipped. I didn’t want to travel with Audra to the full depth of her grief over her sister. But there’s one scene on the train where the hero helps her admit her grief and holds her. I’m not a crier, but boy did that scene get me. And don’t worry – grief really doesn’t dominate the story!

My favorite scenes to write involved the Hollywood Victory Caravan shows themselves. Creating the stars who took part on the tour and then watching their personalities and styles develop as they whirled on and off the stage was such fun. Let me tell you, there are some real characters on that tour!

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

My next book is book four in Guideposts next mystery series. I’m one of six authors writing the series and it’s a contemporary set in the Berkshire area of Massachusetts. It releases in September, and I’m currently writing book ten in that series which will release in spring 2011.

Drawing Entry Bonus Question from Cara: I absolutely love classic Hollywood, so what's your favorite classic movie? I'll play along and answer this too.

My favorite classic series is the six movie Thin Man series. We’ve even got our kids hooked on them now. They’ve got a fun slapstick element as Nick and Nora set out to solve various murders. I love the chemistry between William Powell and Myrna Loy. And I marvel that the first movie was filmed in about two weeks’ time.

My favorite romance is either It Happened One Night or You Can’t Take It with You. It Happened One Night is a romantic comedy with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert that lands on a lot of best movies of all times lists. And there’s nothing like when the wall of Jericho comes down at the end. You Can’t Take It with You is a delightful Jimmy Stewart and Jean Arthur romance that is overflowing with a rich supporting cast of eccentric characters and such strong Christian themes. I love that movie.

I’d love to know your favorite classic movies since I’m starting to review the great classics on my blog.

MY REVIEW

I was pulled in from the start with this book. Not only did the back cover copy intrigue me with the concept of a woman traveling west on an orphan train, but the barren Montana setting and the rich cast of characters only added to the depth to be found within this novel. The pairing of Tricia with Ocieanna, who's edited several of Tricia's novels, is a true winning combination of writing skill and talent. If you love a western setting, you're going to love this newest release from the Love Finds You line of books from Summerside Press.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Tricia Goyer

1. If your hero/heroine were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Julia would be homemade peach. She's sweet and simple!

2. Are there any themes in Wild West Christmas that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

The theme that God is our true home is a strong theme. I believe this is a theme that has been strong in our family, too. God called us to Montana in 1995--away from our family and friends. He has done wonderful things for us here and we've never regretted it!

3. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

My next book comes out February 2009 ... All Things Hidden. It's part of Guidepost's Home to Heather Creek Series.

The past is brought to light...

Charlotte is cleaning out the basement of Bedford Community Church when she comes across a tattered and yellowed newspaper article. The clipping, published more than a century ago, implicates her great-great-grandfather in the loss of funds intended to help finish building the church. Charlotte has heard stories about the incident through the years, but now it seems the past has come back to haunt her. Is it just her imagination or are people treating her differently now that they think she’s descended from a crook? Will Charlotte be able to clear her family’s name once and for all?

Meanwhile, Sam is spending time with a new girl in town—and is keeping secrets from his grandparents about where they go. Christopher is trying to get an article published in the local paper, and Emily reluctantly partners with a foreign exchange student on a class project and eventually comes to see that they’re not that different after all. As old secrets are brought to light, the whole family is reminded that the truth is often more complicated than it seems.

ABOUT THE BOOK

It's 1877 and Alexia Travers is alone in the world. Her father has died unexpectedly, leaving her burdened with a heavily mortgaged horse ranch. Marrying one of the town's all-too-willing bachelors would offer an easy solution, but Alex has no interest in marriage. Instead, she dons men's trousers and rides the range, determined to make the ranch a success on her own.

But despite Alex's best efforts, everything seems to go wrong: ranch hands quit, horses are stolen, and her father's gold goes missing. Alex is at her wit's end when wrangler Justin Phillips arrives in Last Chance with his young son, looking for a job. But there seems to be more to Justin's story than he's willing to share. Will Alex ever be able to trust him? More importantly, will the independent woman finally learn to depend on God?

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

Two different incidents helped shape my story. I was flipping channels one evening to find the news and caught a brief blurb near the end of a newscast. Something was mentioned about a man running from a church and being tackled on the lawn. I didn't find out if he was caught stealing, had mugged someone, or what. My mind started questioning, wondering why he'd run...maybe he was poor and needed help, but had given in to temptation and stolen something inside. I jotted the idea in my "might use someday" folder.

The second incident was researching the subject of women owning and running a horse ranch in the 1800's...my daughter worked on a cattle ranch as a horse/cattle wrangler, and I liked the idea of a woman trying to run a ranch alone. I found a historical woman, Kittie Wilkins, who was highly successful at doing so, and decided it was a workable theory. My original story line was going to be contemporary, then transitioned to a historical when we discovered Last Chance no longer exists. The scene with the man running from the church ended up being incorporated into the story line as part of the hero's thread.

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that are theirs and theirs alone?

Most of the material that concerns horses had to do with my experience (other than the horses being stolen). We've owned horses for over 35 yrs., and have done some breeding. We also owned two cougars (not taken from captivity)--we rescued one of them from an abusive home--so I understand some of the behavior of the big cats, hence the scene with the cougar. Hunter, the dog that Alexia owns, is patterned after my daughter Marnee's dog (also named Hunter), and Alexia shares some of the same traits as Marnee. The scene where Alexia almost faints while cutting bread in the kitchen happened to me in exactly the same way.

Justin is his own man...nothing was taken from real life (other than the scene where he runs from the church). He wasn't patterned from anyone I know, and each of his personality traits were his alone.

3. If one of your characters were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

I think Alexia would be Rocky Road...wonderful flavor, but you have a few little chunks that need to be chewed before you can swallow it. Her independent spirit caused some 'bumps and chunks' along the way, but her acceptance of others gave her an amazing flavor!

Justin?...Hmm...a little harder....Maybe chocolate mocha. Stronger flavor than most ice cream, and a bit more rugged---I'm guessing that with the chocolate/coffee type combo, it might have some caffeine...which can give a burst of energy or will keep you awake at night. Justin had that effect on Alexia at times, LOL!

4. Are there any themes in Love Finds You in Last Chance California that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

The theme of hope, that no matter how the odds are stacked against you, God can bring you through if you trust Him. Alexia didn’t appear to have much hope of success, and the townspeople and some of her own employees didn’t want her to make it. She had to discover that God is all she needed when people questioned her motives and refused to support her. I hope my reader will not only be entertained by a fast moving story set in the Old West, but will also come away with an understanding that God’s unconditional love and acceptance is always there, no matter the situation we find ourselves in.

Yes, a theme developed as I went along that I hadn't planned, and that was one of unconditional acceptance. I knew it was something Alex was searching for, but didn't realize the far reaching extent it would have when it encompassed Christy, a secondary character in deep need of love and acceptance. Alex was able to help meet that need, even when her own need was great. Oftentimes we find that our own wounds are healed when we reach out and help heal someone else.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

I can't say that any particular part was difficult to write. Occasionally I hit a wall in my writing because I'm a seat of the pants writer...I do a very brief sketch of the book with the most crucial parts outlined, but I don't know the details of what will happen in between. In my first book I struggled with presenting the setting for the story, but had a much easier time with this one. My only real difficulty was filling in the spots between each 'crisis' with everyday type events.

There were two things I'd say were my favorite--the old west ranch setting--I grew up reading Zane Grey and loving horses, as well as watching all the old TV westerns, so this book was a joy to write. Also, I also loved creating the characters...especially Christy Grey. I'm always drawn to the underdog or the not so nicer people in my books, and enjoy seeing where they'll take me as the story progresses.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

My next release is Finding Jeena, the sequel to The Other Daughter, and it should be releasing around the end of January, 2010, or possibly in Dec., 2009, not sure yet. Jeena was the not-so-nice friend of Susanne Carson who tried to push Susanne into leaving her husband after she discovered he'd been unfaithful prior to their marriage. Finding Jeena helps us see what made Jeena into the type of person she is. Here's a brief peek:

Jeena's new job with Browning and Thayer promised big things, and she intended to take full advantage in every way she could. New clothes, new townhouse, new car and new furniture were just the start. Rumors around town cast her new boss in a shady light, but she set aside her uneasy feelings…the money was good and his ethics weren't her concern.

A few weeks later her world began to shake. Her salary wasn't paid on time and things were happening in the office that didn’t bode well for her future. Money was disappearing and the investors were making trouble. Her boss disappeared and his partner was left to take the fall, along with anyone else associated with the company.

Jeena's carefully crafted world began to crumble and her struggle with alcohol began to rear its head again. Dragged into court to be interrogated was only the beginning...

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

I have a friend who’s an image coach, and I’ve always been intrigued with her career. So, that got the little wheels turning in my head. Then I came up with a very simple concept—two sisters who were very different. One would be an image coach and the other would be in desperate need of an image coach. Then I thought, "What if both sisters fall in love with the same man?" Now that seemed like an interesting concept since it would have a lot of natural built-in conflict, especially if the sisters were close. I wrote an opening scene, and then my fingers began to fly. Even though I generally know where the novel is going, many times the story reveals itself as I go along.

By the way, I hired the amazing Circle of Seven Productions to do a book trailer for Love Finds You in Humble Texas. Visit my web site to see. Hope you enjoy it!

2. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that are theirs and theirs alone?

The heroine, Trudie Abernathy, gradually reveals her passion for art. I took art in college, and even though I don’t have a lot of talent in that area, I do appreciate the artistic gifts of others. Another life experience that influenced my characters was the fact that I grew up on a farm in Oklahoma. My heroine grew up on a farm in Oklahoma. So, much of my own life does seep into my characters and into the plot. It’s impossible not to have our work influenced by where we’ve been, what we’ve done, or who we’ve met. All of it is reflected in our art, whether it’s fine art or music or creative writing.

You also asked what aspects of my characters were theirs alone? Well, Trudie’s sister, Lane Abernathy, is an image coach. Lane is elegant in every way. I’m not. I try, mind you, but in my opinion, I never quite hit the mark. So, that is a character trait I created that I can only dream about. :)

3. If one of your characters were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Since Trudie is an artist at heart, she thinks of life events in colors. And without giving too much away, rainbows become an important symbol in the novel. So I would say that the heroine, Trudie Abernathy, is a big earthen bowl of rainbow sherbet.

4. Are there any themes in Love Finds You in Humble Texas that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the stories progressed?

Even though the name of the town is pronounced, "Umble," I made the main theme about humility. A secondary theme is how God can redeem all things, turning impossible situations into miracles. Here is a tiny excerpt from the book. "Life can be a collage of pretty pictures as well as a thousand shattered moments, but God can bring marvel to it all as He takes those broken pieces and, with the light of His grace shining through them, makes something beautiful, something treasured." I hope the themes are an encouragement to readers.

5. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

The romantic scenes are a lot of work, because I want to keep them fresh. I don’t want readers to groan, thinking that my falling-in-love scenes seem familiar with hackneyed terminology and overused descriptions. I strive to keep them full of surprise and fascinating enough so that readers keep turning those pages. The easiest and most fun parts to write were those with the character, Wiley Flat. He just sort of showed up, and introduced himself to me. And he was a delight. I hope readers enjoy him too. It was always fun for me as a writer when Wiley came back on the scene.

6. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

I'd love for folks to drop my site at www.anitahigman.com to see all of my books. Thanks for inviting me to your blog, Tiff!

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. You are helping to launch a brand new line for a new publishing house in Summerside Press. Tell us a little about the experience and the line.

It all happened so fast, but I'm honored and humbled to be one of the launch authors for Summerside's new "Love Finds You" romance line. My editor, Rachel Meisel has been amazingly encouraging as we worked on a very tight deadline. I'm pleased with the finished product: my novel "Love Finds You in Miracle, Kentucky."

2. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

I actually began writing "Miracle" in 2005. It took three years for the Lord to find a the perfect fit for it. But my inspiration for the story -- and for all my books -- comes from Jesus Christ. He gives me little glimpses along life's road and I turn them into novels.

3. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that are theirs and theirs alone?

God truly saved me out of a "horrible pit and miry clay" (Psalm 40:2). The Lord saved my marriage, too, and showed me that no matter what the circumstances, there's always hope, because there is Him. So what I experienced in those trials and the miracles that followed are reflected in my books. I write healing fiction for hurting hearts, because I know what it's like to feel wounded and hopeless but I also know what it's like to be delivered.

4. If one of your characters were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

I think the main character, Meg, would be Rocky Road because her life has had its ups and downs. Her grandmother, Loretta, would be Butter Pecan, traditional, smooth, yet a little nutty. Vance would be French Vanilla, a little old fashioned by generally loved by all, and his little girl, Cammy, would be Pink Cotton Candy.

5. What themes exist in Love Finds You in Miracle, Kentucky that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the story progressed?

This story's main theme is good decisions always lead to happy endings. Sometimes good decisions, those which line up with God's Word, take courage to make and carry out. But once followed through upon, blessings await.

6. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

One of the most difficult characters to write was Kent. On the surface he's likeable, even noble, but when his true colors surface, he's...well, when you read my book you'll find out.

My favorite parts to write were Cammy's scenes. She's eight years old and I modeled her personality after some of the third graders I used to teach in Sunday school and also after my niece Madeline. Maddie proved most helpful in informing me about Hannah Montana and other things girls her age enjoy these days.

7. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

My next release is titled Dixie Hearts (Barbour Publishing). The collection features my novel "Southern Sympathies."

Spotlight on Sandra D. Bricker and Love Finds You in Snowball, Arkansas

Today, I'm honored to feature the first of the 2 debut authors selected to launch the brand-new romance line for Summerside Press. The "Love Finds You" books specialize in unique towns across America and include a romance that you're sure to love...all the while learning about a unique small town. You just never know. It could be yours!

Sandra D. Bricker has been chosen one of two authors to launch the new Love Finds You line of inspirational romance for Summerside Press this month, and she's here today to "chat" with you.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

SANDRA D. BRICKER declared the words, "I'm going to be a writer when I grow up," to her father on a Sunday afternoon in Slidell, Louisiana. She was 5 years old, and was referring to being able to string her cursive letters together to write her full name for the first time, but the declaration proved somewhat prophetic. By the time she reached high school and her first article was published in The Cincinnati Enquirer, Sandie knew writing was what she wanted to do. For more than a decade, Sandie lived in Los Angeles and, while writing in every spare moment, worked as a personal assistant and publicist to some of daytime television's hottest stars. When her mother became ill in Florida, she walked away from that segment of her life and moved cross-country to take on a new role: Caregiver.

Sandie's interest in telling a story knows no boundaries. Three novels for middle readers carved out the beginning of the journey; then Avalon Books followed up with two hardbound romance novels in 2001: unWANTED: Husband (romantic comedy) and Change of Heart (romantic suspense). The response was tremendous, and Sandie was asked to pen a sequel ... and so Sins of the Past was released in December 2003. Next up was another romantic comedy; Wish I Weren't Here was released in February 2005.

After spending nearly 15 years dealing with her celebrity clients' fans, Sandie finds it amusing that she is suddenly the one getting fan mail! "When people were actually buying my books at a recent signing, I found myself wanting to go around and invite them all to dinner or offer to bake them cookies. Hey! In fact ... maybe I'll do that very soon."

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. You are helping to launch a brand new line for a new publishing house in Summerside Press. Tell us a little about the experience and the line.

When I first read about Summerside Press and the line of inspirational romance they were starting, it seemed like a perfect next step for me. I'd been publishing for several years with Avalon Books, doing sweet romance. As a Christian, I'd been trying to break into the inspirational market for years but never quite found the right fit. Summerside's whole outlook was just what I was looking for.

I submitted several proposals, and always got a positive response, but ultimately every one of them was rejected. Then one day, Rachel Meisel emailed me and asked if we could have a conference call. The first thing she said when we started the call was that she wouldn't be buying any of the manuscripts I'd proposed! I thought, "Hmph. You're calling to reject me a second time? That's different." But then she went on to tell me that the Summerside staff had a meeting to talk about what they really wanted for the two launch spots, and for one of the two of them they wanted something light and funny ... and they felt like I was just the author to deliver it.

This came as a pretty big surprise since everything I'd sent them was pretty serious. The great thing was that she said it was my emails that convinced them. Apparently, I'm funnier than I thought! Three days after I turned in the proposal, I heard from the creative director who wrote, "Sandie, you nailed it! I knew you would."

2. What gave you the inspiration for this story?

A lot of inspiration came from the setting. Summerside's Love Finds You line is all centered around unique rural towns across the country, and I'd spent some time in Arkansas when I was a publicist. When Rachel said they wanted something for Snowball, Arkansas, I was thrilled. I'd been so moved by the area of the Ozarks around the Buffalo National River that I'd talked often about retiring there one day, and suddenly I had crystal-clear 20/20 about the purpose of that trip and falling in love with the area.

Additional inspiration came with the freedom handed to me when they asked me to write something funny. Once I created Lucy and set her down into a couple of funny situations, the story kind of wrote itself. I fell in love with the hero of the story right along with her, and enjoyed the lessons about trusting God with our future.

3. How much of your own experiences influenced your characters? What aspects became traits that are theirs and theirs alone?

A little piece of me is in all of my characters, but Lucy has my goofiness. I am not an outdoorsy kind of girl by any stretch of the imagination. When other people go camping, I head for the nearest hotel with movie channels and room service. There are several situations in the book that are taken from real life, I'm sorry to report. For instance, when claustrophobic Lucy goes on a tour of underground caverns, she is hit in the head by a flying bat. That idea came from a 4th of July I spent in the mountains in California. The sun had just gone down, and while we were waiting for the fireworks all these birds (well, what I thought were birds!) were flying around overhead. I was just in the middle of asking someone what kind of birds they were when one of them flew right into my forehead with a thud. I'd always heard that bats have a built-in radar to keep things like that from happening, so during my research for the book I asked one of the cavern guides if that could happen inside their caves. He laughed and said, "It's unlikely, but not unheard of." Then he snorted and said, "Some people just attract those kind of things." He said a mouthful there. Lucy and I share that unfortunate magnetic something!

4. If one of your characters were an ice cream flavor, what would he/she be and why?

Well, Lucy would absolutely be Rocky Road. Her journey is full of bumps and tumbles ... but it's worth it to her because the outcome is that she finds yummy true love.

Matt, on the other hand, would be a beautiful, sweet, creamy vanilla that seems plain at first glance, but contains so many unexpected nuances. And oh-so delicious. :)

5. What themes exist in Love Finds You in Snowball, Arkansas that you hope the reader sees? Are there any themes that weren't overt but developed as the story progressed?

Destiny and the hand of God guiding us through life is a universal theme in all of my books. I'm a true believer. The theme of this particular book, however, is more about who we were created to be. Lucy is a very unique girl, but she gets this idea in her head that she has to be someone completely different in order to snag the guy she thinks she wants. The underlying message of her story is that we don't have to make ourselves over to fit with the right person; the right person finds their way to us because of who we are at the core.

6. What were your most difficult parts to write? Your favorite?

I can honestly tell you that, outside of a very strict tiimeline in turning in the manuscript, there wasn't any portion of this book that was difficult to write. It was a whirlwind adventure, and I really loved taking the ride with Lucy and Matt and their friends. My favorite parts to write were the mishaps, like her encounter with the bat, or when she tries to catch a fish and then gets freaked out when she sees it up close. I found myself laughing out loud as I was writing. Once when I was a kid, I saw a chicken close up and my mom said I tried to be a vegetarian for the next year of my life.

7. When is your next book coming out and what is the story?

I'm not sure about the next book, actually. My agent is handling negotiations on a couple of projects, but there's nothing in stone that I can talk about yet. I do hope to do another Love Finds You book or two for Summerside, though. I think this line is the combination of all the best parts of the inspirational market, and I'm really eager to see what the public thinks of what we've tried to do.
