Victoria Elizabeth Stockton - Week 1

It's doubtful that I'll be counting up by the week ad infinitum, but for now, it works. :) There isn't much to report from the first week home. As most of you know, babies don't do a whole lot at the start. Eat, sleep and mess their diapers. And we've had plenty of that. The good news is that everything is normal, which brings a great sigh of relief.

Let's see.

Victoria had her first doctor's visit at 4 days old, and she was given a clean bill of health other than a request to return in 2 days for a weight check. She had lost 1lb. in the hospital and the pediatrician wanted to make sure she was still gaining. Boy, did she! When we brought her back Wednesday, she had gained 7 ounces in two days! Little porker. LOL!

I also attended the first breastfeeding support group meeting last week and will be going again tomorrow. It's encouraging to meet with other moms, but even better to be able to weigh your child before and after to see just how much they are getting from you. Unlike a bottle with a measurable line, breastfeeding is harder to gauge. I know Tori is getting enough, because she's content, but I like to see the numbers.

She's only had 2 exhausting nights where she kept me up most of the night fussing or wanting to be held, rocked, walked around, etc. Otherwise, she's pretty much on a 3-hour cycle of feeding/sleeping with 2-3 periods of alert, eyes wide open moments. We've been so blessed with a beautiful and seemingly even-tempered angel. Likely due to the laid back attitude of Mom and Dad. :)

Yesterday was Easter, and we bought her a dress to wear to church. It also snowed quite a bit in the morning, so instead of a sunny day, we had all white. And when we got to church, we didn't even make it past the front door or entryway of the lobby before being surrounded by everyone wanting to see the baby. Tori slept through the service though and did great.

We drove down to her grandparents (Stu's parents) that afternoon for dinner, and some of the family came to see her. Still waiting for her great-grandparents to return from their winter in Arizona and her aunt and uncle from Denver, as well as our cousins with her 2nd cousin. Of course, my side of the family arrives Friday, and we're spending a week in Vail. It's the first grandbaby and first niece for my side, and that's big stuff. So, I don't know if I'll have a post next week or not. All depends on the internet connection.

Other than that, she's been smiling, taking in the world, loving to be rocked and held, and just being a huge blessing to our lives. The days pass so fast, but I'll be glad to get back into a routine or part of my old schedule so I can actually know which day is which. They've all blurred together so far. Stu goes back to work tomorrow, so I'm on my own for 3 days until my family arrives.

Praying I will be able to handle everything.

Until next week....

Baby Update -- Baby Stockton is Here!

Yes, it's true. As I said last week, I'd be back this week with a report of the birth of our little one and pictures. But first things first...

We are now the proud parents of a beautiful little girl!

Victoria Elizabeth Stockton arrived at 3:29pm on Thursday, April 2nd, weighing 7lbs. 9oz. and measuring 20in. long.

Baby Photo Album

Labor officially began at 12:30pm on Wednesday, April 1st, and I spent most of the day praying she would hold off until at least 12:01am to avoid being an April Fool's arrival. :) I guess I prayed too much, as she lasted another 15 hours after that! So, all told, the labor was 27-1/2 hours long and somewhat grueling in the wee hours of the morning.

Let's see. I'll try to recall as many details as possible without too many specifics. *winks*

I mentioned last week that we had an induction scheduled for April 2nd at 7:30am if we didn't go into labor beforehand. Well, as it often happens, the baby decided to start coming just a little early. After all afternoon of the contractions increasing in intensity and decreasing in the distance between, hubby (Stuart) joined me at home after he came home from work.

We had a simple dinner of fish sticks and fries, all the while looking outside and seeing the heavy snow blowing and falling. Stu and I shared several comical looks regarding the baby's decision to come during a winter storm. Doesn't it always happen that way?

Around 7:30pm, the contractions were 2 minutes apart, so we called Labor & Delivery and they said to come in. So, we grabbed our bags by the door, bundled up and headed to the car. With prayers for safe travels and God's angels protecting us and the car, we were on our way around 8pm. We made it all the way to the last light before the hospital when the airbag light came on and smoke started coming out of the steering column.

Stu rolled down the window and stopped at the red light. Then, the car stalled. I groaned, a sinking feeling in my stomach accompanying the contractions. Stu turned the key...nothing. No sound, no engine turning, nada. Here we are, sitting at a red light, me in labor with contractions very close together, stuck in a snowstorm, only 1/2 mile from the hospital. It was in sight, and we couldn't get there.

Stu turned on the flashers, hopped out and flagged down a minivan. The lady rolled down the window and Stu asked if she could take me to the hospital. She agreed, and Stu came to help me out of the car to the van. He said he'd be there as soon as he could and off I went. In no time at all, we were at the ER entrance. The lady helped me inside and wished me luck. I notified the lady at the desk that I had called ahead, and she had an attendant bring me a wheelchair.

Once upstairs, I was quickly admitted and set up in a temporary room to be monitored. By now, it was 8:45pm. After being hooked up to the monitors and being checked for vitals, the nurse brought me some water and left me to rest. I didn't do much of that with worrying about Stu and the car. Thankfully, he called a few moments later and told me AAA was coming to tow the car and state patrol helped him move it off the road. His sister and brother-in-law were coming to get him. It ended up with B-I-L waiting with the car for AAA and sister bringing him to me.

After being checked again, they had a labor/delivery room set up for me. Helping me down the hall, the double doors opened, and I finally saw Stu again. His sister was with him, and the four of us (with the nurse) made our way slowly down the hall. Once settled into the room, his sister gave me a hug and said she looked forward to hearing the news of the baby's arrival. I thanked her for all they did and said we'd call as soon as we had something to share.

So, there we were. The night nurse was on, had gone over the details with me, and said I was free to move around as much as I liked. At 11pm, I was dilated to 6cm and things had progressed from 3cm just the day before. That was when things stalled, but I didn't find that out until 2am. Checked again, and no progress. So, Stu and I walked, used the birthing ball, sat in the hot tub, etc. From 2am-4am, the contractions were one on top of another, and I had no relief. But by 3:30, there still wasn't any change.

That was when I decided to go with an epidural. I was plumb exhausted and knew if I had to keep this up, I'd be far too tired to do what was necessary in the final moments. The nurse kept reassuring me that I hadn't failed in any way, that I had done admirably well and remained in full control. That made me feel much better about the decision.

After the epidural, I was instructed to get some rest and let it work. I was confined to bed now, though. Couldn't do anything but rest. :) Stu went over to the sofa and slept. By 7am, there was still no change, only I had managed to get a little rest. My doctor arrived and broke my water in an attempt to encourage the baby to drop. There was a smidgeon of progress, but by 9am, not enough. So, they gave me a very small dose (level 2) of oxytocin/pitocin to jumpstart things. That worked, but slowly.

By 1pm on Thursday, I was at 9cm finally. By 2, I was at 10 and fully effaced. The day nurse made plans to get me started on the pushing. We began at 2:30 and things went fast. I saw the nurse call my doctor to say we had begun. Then, she was on the phone again saying, "I know I just spoke with the doctor, but all of a sudden, the baby is here, and I need him now for delivery!" LOL!

Doc arrived, prepped me and the room, and 10 minutes later, Victoria was here. With just a small tear and no episiotomy, I had my little girl. Because we didn't know the gender, the doctor had Stu call it as soon as she came out. He said they wouldn't do that. The father had to. With shock and awe and even a tear in his eye, Stu said, "It's Victoria."

As soon as they suctioned, she let out a cry and they took her to the warming bed to clean her. Stu crossed the room and took pictures, and he was there when they put her on the scale for the first time to weigh her. Then, they swaddled her, and brought her to me.

So much happened in a blur, but it was all worth it when I was able to hold my little girl in my arms. The nurse took a few pictures of our new family. Too soon, they came and took her to the nursery for her first bath. Stu went with them and took more pictures. Then, the nurse helped me with getting settled again and prepping to be moved to the recovery/post-partum room.

Stu's parents arrived around 5:30 and sat with me while we waited for Stu and Victoria to return from the nursery. Meanwhile, I ordered dinner -- SO glad to finally be able to eat after nearly 24 hours. Once in a wheelchair, we were on our way, and by 6:30, we were in our recovery room.

Family stayed for a little while, then Stu's sister came with her two kids. They wanted to meet their niece and cousin for the first time. She was officially an aunt and they had their first cousin. :)

The rest of the night passed in a blur, but I know everyone left, and we settled into feeding and resting as much as possible. I could cover the rest of our hospital stay, but it was fairly standard, with visits from the pediatrician, my doctor and lactation consultants the next morning, along with nurses on staff every few hours to check vitals.

It's ironic...you're in the hospital to "rest" and you do everything but with all of the interruptions. :)

Finally, after 3 nights and 2 days in the hospital, we were discharged Saturday a little before noon. All packed up, we headed out into super high winds and drove home. Stu's parents were at our house, with casseroles, food and an offer to stay while we slept. Victoria slept as well, but it was nice to get a good nap.

Now, we're here and taking it one day at a time. From here forward, weekly posts will be progress with Victoria. :)

For now, enjoy the pictures and know more will come each week. Thanks for hanging in here with this long story. Hope you made it to the end. *winks*

Baby Update -- Week 41, Any Day Now!

Yes, here I am again. I know so many of you are hoping you won't be reading a post from me unless it's with pictures of the little one I've been carrying for 9 months. Well, there are 2 pieces of good news this week, despite being overdue.

First, I have an induction date scheduled for April 2nd. That means no matter what, baby Stockton will be here by Thursday at the latest. Second, I have done my own calculations and discovered my original due date was actually off by 5-6 days. The actual date should have been the 28th or 29th, which means I'm only 1 or 2 days past due, instead of 7. Sounds much better and doesn't make me so anxious.

Babies born too far past due date are at higher risk for being overweight or suffering from other complications, even delivery complications for both mother and baby. I measured at 40cm last Thursday, so doc scheduled the induction because he didn't want to go more than 1 week beyond that measurement. Phew!

Now, will this little one choose to arrive before being forced out, or will we have to wait until Thursday. I jokingly said baby is waiting for April 1st just to be silly. Hmm...

...You know, I have no concept of time or dates inside here. I only know how cozy and comfortable it is, and how warm. So, I can't be blamed for waiting or for not coming on a specific date. I can't tell time or read a calendar yet. :) But, if I have to choose between coming on my own or being forced out, I'd prefer doing it myself.

Believe me, I'm not hanging out in here on purpose. But it's not easy getting ready when I'm not in control of everything. There's another body involved, and so many other factors in order for it all to work in tandem. I'm trying to do what I can to help get things rolling. And I know Mommy has done her part. Daddy too. I've felt those bumpy roads, tasted those spicy foods, and been jostled all around during all that cleaning of the house.

From what I can gather, there isn't much more time. I'm getting excited about meeting Mommy and Daddy and all these other people whose voices I've heard the past few months. It sounds like a real fun place out there. And who can beat all the love I know I'm going to get from everyone? I'll be making my appearance real soon. I promise...

...Baby Stockon is right. It won't be long. I've made it this far. I know I can make it another 3 days, if necessary. Just an update on last week, though.

As you know, we were in the hospital in the early AM to find out it was false labor contractions. We returned again at 2am Thursday morning due to decreased fetal movement. No clue why, but baby just didn't move much from supper time until late at night, despite my eating and drinking juice. I ended up with another glass of ice-cold apple juice and having monitors hooked up to me before the baby actually kicked. And since I had an appointment later that morning, they went ahead and sent me home. Otherwise, they would have kept me and had my doctor see me first thing.

At the appointment, I ended up having an ultrasound and NST performed. Everything looked great, so no risks right now. Fluid levels around the baby were right on target, and baby responded well to the NST, with one buzz from the stimulator. :) I go in again tomorrow for a repeat of those 2 tests, then the induction on Thursday if the baby decides to wait that long.

With the delivery date in solid sight, it feels surreal in some ways and scary in others. I have to say I would have been far worse without the support of so many of you here. It has meant so much to know you've been reading, praying, and encouraging. Finally, we have a date. This time next week, I'll have some pictures of our little miracle.

I just figure my baby is just perfecting those camera poses and brushing up on beauty or handsome sleep so as to be all that much cuter. :)

Thanks so much for coming along this journey with me. These are going to make a great inclusion in the baby's scrapbook. Signing off for my last pre-delivery update. Back in a week to let you meet baby Stockton.

Baby Update -- Week 40, Any Day Now!

One more week, and I'm still here posting. (sigh) The good news is that I *am* in early labor. Been here since about 8:30pm last night. Pains started 11pm Saturday night and contractions followed with spikes in the baby's movement. After enduring most of Sunday and all night last night with everything, I called the Labor & Delivery Triage at 6:30am this morning.

Hubby and I headed into the hospital for a labor check only to find out the regular contractions that have been coming every 5 minutes since 8:30 last night were irritability (contractions only lasting 30-40 seconds in waves) in my uterus and not labor contractions. They *were* however right on par with early labor. I was 2cm dilated, with a very soft and anterior cervix, almost fully effaced, and the nurse felt the baby's head.

So, she said to go home and rest, then take a walk. The status quo could change in 2 hours or 2 days. I pray it's not days. Ack! It's an oh-so-maddening game of waiting for my baby, my body and my uterus to get all their ducks in line and start talking to each other at the same time. That's all we're waiting for. And since the baby plays a role in this, I'll surrender a little space to the tiny miracle inside me....

I'm here and I'm head-down. I'm trying my hardest to get into the right position, and I can hear the dejection in Mommy's voice when Daddy asks how things are going. I'm not doing it on purpose. Just proves, as Daddy said this morning, that I'm a true combination of the two of them. I started early like Daddy is always early, and I'm hanging on being stubborn, like Mommy.

I've already told Mommy's body that I'm ready to come out. It just doesn't seem to want to listen. It will be great to see Mommy and Daddy with my own eyes and get out of this dark, liquidy home I've had for 9 months. I know Mommy has reached the due date today, and I thought it might be fun to come today, but try telling that to this placenta thing and a body that's not your own.

So, I'm here and kicking and healthy. I promise I want to be on the outside as much as everyone else wants me there too. Sure wish I could give a solid indicator, though. For now, I'll wait with Mommy....

And wait I am. (sigh) Those irritability contractions are still going regular. I've taken a nap to get rested. Now, hubby and I are going to go grab some Chinese food and go walk the entire zoo. It's built into the side of a mountain with lots of climbing and hills. We're also going to find a bumpy road along the way.

They say early labor can last 12 hours for first-time moms. Well, it's been about 16 so far, with no real change. I've got to do something! I truly won't handle 3 more days of this until my appt. on the 26th.

Btw, on Saturday, I scrubbed the bathroom, ran the vacuum, cleaned the kitchen, cleared and straightened and even washed our deck doors last week from puppy nose art. The baby's area is ready, there is nothing left to buy, and there's nothing left to clean. If nothing happens during or after our walk, I'm coming home and doing laundry.

Perhaps I should give my friend a call and go make use of her trampoline in her back yard....

Baby Update -- Week 39, 1 Week to Go!

Yes, I'm still here and still posting updates. :) And yes, I'm rather tired...in case you can't tell by that picture to the left. Yesterday was an eventful day with 7-8 regular contractions during church service and 2 more on the ride home. When we got home, I looked in my book and realized it was pre-labor contractions, since they didn't last more than 45 seconds and they went away. Shucks! I did go for a long walk with the dog yesterday and had another couple of contractions in the evening, but nothing steady.

So, we're back to the waiting game. I intend to go for walk this afternoon with my iPod, use my exercise ball for sitting and perhaps walk the stairs a few times. This morning, the baby shifted and caused some sharp pains in the lower pelvic area. So, I'm thinking this little one is getting ready. I just pray it's this week.

Oh, and I've created a baby guessing game where you can guess the gender, weight, length and birthday. Points are awarded based upon how close you get. Hubby and I have an EXTRA SPECIAL prize for the person who guesses the closest to the actual stats when they occur. Come on by!

http://www.expectnet.com/games/BabyStockton

Hubby thinks it will be tomorrow and that we'll have a little red-headed girl on St. Paddy's Day. Wouldn't that be amusing? :) I have a doctor's appointment on Wednesday to check progress if I haven't gone into labor by then. Doc said he is on call this coming weekend, and if all looks good, he'll be happy to offer induction if we wish. I'm just not sure I want to force the baby's hand. Then again, perhaps scheduling that will scare the baby into coming on his/her own. LOL! I'm still measuring a few days ahead, so perhaps this little one will come this week anyway.

As for the rest of the appointment last week, my blood pressure was 114/79, which is great. Numbers-wise, doc says I'm doing fantastic. The baby's heartbeat was 145. I only gained 1 more pound (for a total of 12 lbs. overall), and there was no real progress on the dilation or effacement. But I have been having the pre-labor contractions, and doc said the dilation isn't an indication of imminent labor. He said there were women who weren't dilated at all and went into labor. So, it's anybody's guess.

I've been talking to the baby and trying to encourage an appearance. We're getting anxious to meet this little one face to face. Perhaps the baby can share more...

Hmm, I don't know what I should say today. It's been interesting in here lately, that's for sure. With the muscles moving and tightening on me a lot more, I'm finding it difficult to remain comfortable. When those walls close in on me, I can't do anything but curl into a ball and wait it out. Thankfully, they don't last long, but yesterday, they were one right after another. I wonder if someone or something is trying to tell me something.

Whether I decide to make an appearance tomorrow or next week, it's pretty much all the same to me. I am truly R-E-A-D-Y to face the big bright world outside of Mommy's tummy...at least I think I am. My home here is getting ready too. Since I'm well stocked up on fat and all of my organs have put on the finishing touches, I'm just chilling here, getting into final position and "hanging out" waiting for that elusive moment when all systems synchronize in my body and Mommy's to get things moving. I've been feeling the urge a little but not fully. I know Mommy is getting anxious. I've heard her say so. Wish I could do more to help, but I don't think it's up to me.

One thing is certain. I feel all squished in here most days and it's not easy to move anymore. Mommy told me yesterday that I'll have lots of room to stretch and move and wiggle if I come out. That sounds good to me, but it also means I have to leave the warm comfort of this little home. It's the only home I've ever known. That's scary to think of changing. I do want to meet Mommy and Daddy though. And there's someone else they call Roxie. I'm not sure who or what that is, but I think it's going to be fun meeting her.

I'm 39 weeks with 7 days to go...IF I stay in here that long...

All right, so I know my little angel is ready. Now, what about me? Am I truly ready to embark on the oh-so-fun adventures of labor? I sure hope so! I know the end result will be more than worth any pain.

Our bags are packed with the exception of electronics that we still use daily and the final toiletry items. But we have the bag ready for all of that to be added in those final moments before we walk out the door. Also just arranged to have my SIL or nephew check on our dog once we go into the hospital, so that's all set. I'll be completing the paperwork for a birth certificate and social security card for the baby today and placing it with the baby book in the baby's bag.

The back-facing infant seat is installed and tight and ready for the ride home. The baby's adorable "first outfit" is packed with an extra one and some socks and a hat. We've got the phone tree list and names for those people to call so we have everyone covered. Our birth plan has been ironed out and discussed, and it's tucked away in my admission files at the hospital.

That's all for today. Back to finishing laundry and the paperwork to take with us to the hospital for the birth certificate and social security card for the baby.

Baby Update -- Week 38, 2 Weeks to Go!

All right, so we're truly into a waiting game now. I have a few more days with just a small number of things on my "to do" list. After that, this little one can come out any time. In fact, any day after the 12th, and the eviction notice can be answered free and clear. :) Of course, I'm not sure I'd want Friday, the 13th, but if it happens, oh well.

Last week, I had another weekly appointment. No change in dilation or effacement. Baby's heartbeat began at 180 after an active spout in the waiting room, then went down to normal around 150. That's where it's been for the past month or so. I measured at 38 weeks, so still a few days ahead, but pretty much on target. I haven't gained any weight in about 6 weeks and am maintaining fairly well. My blood pressure was 120/69, so still going great. My next appointment is this coming Thursday.

After that day, I'll be using the exercise ball, walking, going up and down the stairs, looking to eat some fresh pineapple and trying to persuade hubby to take me for a really nice meal at Red Lobster for fresh lobster, since it will likely be our last one alone for quite a while. Not that I mind. I'm getting quite anxious to meet this little one. Being an incubator is special, but it's time for baby to meet the world...

Wow, I've really plumped up. I now weigh somewhere between 6-8 pounds and I'm between 19-21 inches long (like a leek). I have a firm grasp, which Mommy and Daddy and everyone will soon be able to test when they hold my hand for the first time! My organ systems have matured and are ready for life outside the womb.

Wondering what color my eyes will be? You may not be able to tell right away. If I'm born with brown eyes, they'll likely stay brown. If I'm born with steel gray or dark blue eyes, they may stay gray or blue or turn green, hazel, or brown by the time I'm 9 months old. That's because these things called irises may gain more pigment in the months after I'm born, but they usually won't get "lighter" or more blue. Hmm...Mommy has hazel green and Daddy has blue. Wonder what I'll get.

I've got my meconium stockpile building up (that's the first poo), lots of healthy baby fat, a super intelligent brain that'll keep growing with me for years to come, and I've more or less reached official baby status -- all I need to do is "head out" and say hello to the rest of the world and especially my ready-to-pop momma. She says she feels like she's as big as a house and is making frequent visits to the bathroom because I'm sitting on something called a bladder. That must be the pillow I'm using. It's so comfy!

I'm 38 weeks with 14 days to go...IF I stay in here that long...

Back to the "big-as-a-house" Momma. :) Today, we had our carpets treated and cleaned, so I did some pick-up and straightening this morning. Well, I ran the vacuum and moved a few pieces of furniture and definitely overdid it. The pain in lower abdomen right where the thighs connect to the torso makes it hard to go from sitting to standing position. Once I'm there, though, I'm good. It's just the transition that gets me. Hubby is insisting I take it easy and is watching me like a hawk. So, guess it's more sitting and resting as much as possible. At least the baby wasn't affected at all. Still moving and kicking and healthy as can be in there. Right on schedule.

In the meantime, I'll be using this time to put the final touches on the baby's nursery and take care of necessary tasks I may not get around to for a while after this little one is born. I'll try to take naps since I'm not sleeping well at all, catch up on your reading, and spend uninterrupted time with hubby while I can.

Oh, and I've included some fun pictures of a couple new things we got last week and a little something I did last Friday at my nail appointment.

That's all for today. Back to taking it easy to hubby doesn't yell at me. Looks like he'll be guilted into helping with the rest of the laundry then. :)

Baby Update -- Week 37, 3 Weeks to Go!

I'll try to hit the highlights today. Been feeling so drained and tired lately, and I have SO much to do before this little one arrives.

First, I'm officially full term today, so if labor starts, the doctor won't do anything to stop it. That's exciting! The contractions are occurring, with some cramps and sharp aches for the past 2 weeks, but these are the Braxton Hicks ones with my uterus preparing, not the labor ones that will be sending me to the hospital. Thankfully, there have been only minimal aches and pains, and nothing in the back which might signal a potential for back labor. Praise God!

Oh, and my appointment last week went great. Only gained 1 lb. from the previous week, my blood pressure was a little higher but still normal, baby's heartbeat was a strong 149, and I measured about 5 days ahead at 37 weeks. I was 1-1/2 cm dilated and 70% effaced, but that could remain the same for weeks.

It's harder than ever to reach my feet to put on socks or even get my legs into pants. And I feel like I'm never getting enough sleep. Too uncomfortable at night. It's also difficult getting in and out of cars, but I manage. I have no reason to complain at all, especially compared to the stories I hear from other women. Thank God for my mother and her mother and the "good stock" from which I come. :)

It will be interesting to adapt to the changes once my baby arrives. Just like anything else, I know it will take time, but I'm confident all will go just fine. And now, for a few words from the little acrobat inside...

All right, my weight has leveled off with only a few ounces of fat added this past week. I'm sure Mommy's happy about that, although I've heard her mention her big belly several times. I'm sorry, Mommy! I don't have a scale in here, but Mommy has read that I should weigh in at around 7 lbs and be about 20 inches long. I still find ways to flex my legs and arms in here, so I'm not fighting as much as others inside those Mommies that are nothing more than stick figures. :)

Happily, my internal organs are now developed enough to function in the outside world. I can breathe on my own too! It will be fun to not have this liquidy stuff in my mouth all the time. My immune system though is still developing. That will continue even after I'm born, and when I get that yummy milk from Mommy, I'll get lots and lots of antibodies too, which will help keep me and her healthy.

I can't tell if I have hair or not, as everything feels close to the same in here. From what I hear, Daddy has dark hair and Mommy is a redhead. Hmm...wonder what I'll end up being.

I'm 37 weeks with 21 days to go...

Ok, back to me for a brief bit of closure.

I had my Group B strep test 1-1/2 weeks ago and it came back negative. That was the last test during my prenatal appointments. Now, it's a true waiting game. I just have to keep in mind that only 4-5% of women actual deliver on their predicted due date. And since this is my first pregnancy, I am told I can expect to be anywhere from two days to two weeks late. Praying that doesn't happen, as I want a March baby. I've officially delivered the eviction notice to this little angel. Baby has a month to make a decision on his/her birthday. :)

Yesterday, I had a baby shower and here's the link to the pictures.

It's finally feeling close to complete. We have all of the big ticket items and even some "fun" ones like a bouncer, doorway jumper, swing and exersaucer. We have a lot of diapers now thanks to a diaper raffle at the shower, many many washcloths and blankets, and 4 hooded bath towel sets. This baby will be squeaky clean and toasty warm. LOL!

Finally, I'm not sure if you have heard of spitting in Drain-O and having it predict the gender of your baby, but my family made me do it, so they could find out. I didn't look, but they were more than happy to tell anyone who wanted to know. Now, they just have to keep it a secret from me and Stu for another few weeks. My cousin said her chiropractor does it for every expectant mother who comes into the office, and it's had 100% accuracy so far. Guess we'll see if it was right for me.

That's all for today. Back to finishing up laundry and other items on my "to-do" list.

Baby Update -- Week 36, 4 Weeks to Go!

I'm almost there. I'm entering my final month and I've almost reached the point where my doctor won't stop labor if it starts. At my appointment last week, I was measuring a few days early, but right on target. The baby's heartbeat was 146, my blood pressure was a fantastic 112/74 (the lowest it's been this entire pregnancy!), I hadn't gained any weight from 2 weeks ago, and I had a Group B Strep test done to check for bacteria that might harm the baby during birth. I have my next appointment in 2 days, so I'll find out the results then.

Yesterday, during church service of all places, I experiences a series of tight contractions and actually felt a smidgeon of pain at one point. Considering how low-maintenance this pregnancy has been for the first 8 months, actually being able to identify contractions and know everything is working the way it should felt good. I know, I know. You're likely thinking I'm crazy for wanting to feel pain. It's not really the "pain" I want as much as knowing when a contraction hits.

Now that this little one is taking up so much room, I've noticed a greater degree of difficulty eating a normal-size meal. Smaller, more frequent meals are often easier to handle at this point, which means when I order at a restaurant, I'm invariably taking at least half of it home, sometimes more depending upon what else I had with the meal. Works for me, though, as I get to prolong the enjoyment! I'm still waiting for the day when I get heartburn less often, although I have noticed a slightly easier time breathing. A friend asked today if my baby had "dropped" and I believe this one has...just not all the way. Guess I just have to wait and see if I start to feel increased pressure in your lower abdomen, find walking increasingly uncomfortable, or have to spend even more time in the bathroom. Some of my friends have said it feels as though they're carrying a bowling ball between their legs!

Well, I have a ball of a baby tucked inside, but I'm not quite waddling like that yet. :) And speaking of little balls, it's time to hear from this ball of joy...

All right. So the countdown continues. I'm almost fully developed now and as I said last week, I'm running out of room. Most of my movements are twisting and turning to find a comfortable spot and hoping it's not causing Mommy to be in too much pain. She usually lets me know when I'm hurting her. Sometimes, we get into games of touching hands or her poking at my feet and back. Other times, it's Daddy doing the poking. I can tell the difference. There's also the game of light where I reach out for it or kick it when it shines on Mommy's belly. Of course, that can hurt her too, so I try not to poke too hard. Once in a while, I just feel and hear Mommy let out a loud and long sigh as she shifts. So, I try to shift too and help.

Most of my bones (aside from this soft noggin I have) are now completely hardened, giving me a strong frame from which I can now make my grand debut into the world. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I am structurally ready for a secure launch. In physical fitness news: my muscle tone has also improved over these past few weeks, and you're sure to be impressed by my steel-like grasp if you your finger in my palm or near my toes.

Oh, and remember when I said there's more of me than that liquid stuff I've been living in all these months? Well, I'm still swallowing fluid and building up for that historic first poop. Rest assured, I'll be more than ready to swallow and digest milk after birth. Just practicing my sucking and swallowing in here and getting frustrated by all these hiccups. I sure hope they don't continue once I'm on the outside. They're plain annoying! I'm also shedding most of the downy covering of hair that covered my body as well as that waxy substance covering and protecting my skin during this nine-month amniotic bath.

At the end of this week, I'll be considered full-term and I've moved into a head-down position. Good thing I have this fluid around me, or all the blood might rush to my head and make me dizzy!

And just in case you haven't quite figured it out yet: my Mommy's got herself an adorable and hungry 6.5 lbs 20-inch baby inside her tummy. I sure hope she's ready! I'm 36 weeks with 28 days to go...

You know, this little one has been rather active in the past few days. Makes me glad I've heeded some of the advice given by the books I've read and the web sites I've frequented. It might seem silly to think about "baby-proofing" before the baby's born, but once this angel is on the outside, I know I'll have far less time to think about it. And no, it's not drastic things like securing all of the cabinets in the house, stowing all sharp objects far above baby's reach, getting safety locks on all doors, etc. It's more like making certain the crib is padded, the car seat and baby carrier have the proper head support and cushioning, the car seat is installed correctly and the crib is free from anything overhead that might fall accidentally into the baby's area.

Since I'll likely be a stay-at-home-mom (SAHM), once my baby shows the earliest signs of being mobile, I can make certain the cabinets are secure and all outlets are covered. Besides, we have a border collie who is already eager to have something around to "herd." LOL! I'm sure she'll be a great second mommy and keep this little one quite safe. You should see her when I'm out of sight. She HAS to come find me and make sure I'm within sight range. Otherwise, she gets antsy and frantic. :)

Let's see. What else? We have another appointment Wednesday to meet our baby's pediatrician. Praying he's everything we've heard he is and it will be a perfect match for what we're looking to find in a doctor for our baby. It's going to be a long-term relationship, and we want it to be the right one.

We are also going to be getting our carpets cleaned and our air ducts cleared. We just had our furnace serviced. These are the last 2 things to make certain our home is free and clear of the dust and build-up that might hinder breathing or cause allergins to float in the air we're breathing. I haven't really had the "nesting" bug bite me full-force, but I can feel I'm getting close. I'm starting to want to make sure everything is scrubbed, including the walls, and I wipe down all surfaces a lot more often than I have in the past. Before, I'd dust when I vacuumed. Now, I almost have a dust cloth attached to my hand. :) We'll see how long that lasts!

That's all for today. Back to finishing up laundry.

Baby Update -- Week 35, 5 Weeks to Go!

Wow, week 35. 7/8 of the way done. In some ways, it feels like it's taking forever. In others, it feels like it's flown by. Today is one of those days where it's dragging.

I'm not quite sure how, but it feels like this little one is pressing on something internally that's making it difficult to breathe. I've got a bit of pressure right around the breastbone, and there's a lot of movement in my tummy with pushing on the sides and center. Wonder if my angel had a growth spurt over the weekend. :) It's been a slow day today as a result, but not unbearable.

Last night, I had on and off minor issues with some heartburn, but it wasn't until 4am when I got up to use the bathroom that a new issue developed. My entire left arm from shoulder to hand felt like it was going through growing pains. No tingling, no numbness, no pain. Just a minor ache that annoyed me enough to keep me awake. I ended up waking hubby with my tossing and turning around 5 and he gave my arm a massage which helped. I managed to catch another hour of sleep, then the dog came in to be taken outside. Again, another hour, then it was pointless, and we both got up...dark circles under my eyes and all. *yawn*

Again, though, it's all part of the process, and not unmanageable. Just a bit uncomfortable.

In other news, I've been feeling more frequent belly tightening and contractions, although no labor contractions. I've noticed other women about where I am increasing their watermelon-betwixt-the-legs waddle, but I haven't started that yet. It's just becoming a bit harder to get up and down from sitting and lying down, and my walk is a bit slower.

I know once this your miracle baby is on the outside, this will all be a dim memory. So, I'm catching the cat naps whenever possible and keeping myself hydrated with water, trying to imagine how all of this will be much funnier in hindsight. Speaking of funny, how about a few words from my precious little porker inside...

All right, to set the record straight, I'm trying not to cause Mommy too much discomfort, but it's getting rather cramped in here. If I don't move a bit, I'm going to get stiff. My muscles need some activity. At least she lets me know when she's in pain. I try to move as best I can when that happens.

So you can see things from my side, I'm now nearly 6 lbs minus all of this stuff attached to me that's help keeping me nourished and alive. Mommy has a lot of reasons to be proud. She's doing great, and I'm now trying to decide when I want to make my appearance. She's done an amazing job, and I'll be so happy to finally meet her face-to-face. I know I'm going to love her and Daddy very much.

For now, though, I'm almost busting out of the womb size-wise, but I'm quite snug in here. From what I hear, I have more room than most babies, so it's not so bad. I'm not likely to be doing somersaults anymore, but I'll still be kicking at a steady pace, perhaps throwing in a punch or two. My kidneys are fully developed, and my liver can almost do its full job. Most of my basic physical development is now complete. That means, I'll spend the next few weeks putting on yet a little more weight. I'll try not to make it too much.

Here's a scary thought. Mommy's uterus is now one-thousand times bigger now than when I first came to be. Yikes! I'm 35 weeks with 35 days to go...

Back to Mom again. I have my 35-week appointment this week and will likely get the group B strep test as well as monitored for cervical effacement (thinning of the cervix) and dilation in order to predict labor. It'll be exciting as I move into weekly check-ups now to hear my progress and possibly get a closer estimate of delivery date.

My uterus — which was entirely tucked away inside my pelvis from the start — now reaches up under my rib cage. If I could peek inside, I'm sure I'd see more baby than amniotic fluid now, and that's exciting. My ballooning uterus is crowding my other internal organs, too, which is why I've had these breathing issues and pressure. At leats I have an explanation.

Last week, we finished our birthing class and had our pre-admission appointment at the hospital. Wow! So much information and so many details. We also scheduled an appointment with a pediatrician to meet him beforehand and get set up for post-delivery.

Oh, and my MIL called to say she might take some time off after the baby to come up and help out with anything I need, plus prepare some casseroles for us to freeze and heat when we need to eat. I'm sure nutrition for me will be the last thing on my mind to start, and I'm willing to take any help I can get! My SIL wants the baby born between March 13th and 16th so she can come the week of Spring Break to help. LOL! We'll see what this little one has in mind.

Me? I'm praying for before March 20th so the birthday can fall between the two grandmothers' birthdays. That's not too much to ask, right? :) I mean, that gives this baby a choice of 20 days between March 1st and March 21st. Sounds like a plan to me. *winks*

That's about all for today. I'm back to tending to hubby after he had his wisdom teeth pulled today. Poor baby. :(

An Eclectic Friday

Hmm, for the first time in a while, I'm just throwing together a few things and taking advantage of a posting day when I don't have a spotlight to post. :) I hope you'll indulge me as I share 3 special aspects of my life with you.

1. Pictures of our dog, Roxie.
2. A delightful Valentine's Day surprise
3. Details about my husband's debut novel and a contest where you can win FREE stuff!

* * * * *

Our Dog

Roxie is a Border Collie/Flat-Haired Retriever Mix and she weighs about 60 pounds. Hubby and I rescued her from the Humane Society in October 2007, only 2 months after we were married. We've been supremely blessed ever since. Stu picked her out from a picture online and when we went to meet her, we were both struck with love at first sight.

A friend and fellow author had a random Friday post on her blog talking about pets and sharing pictures of her daughter's latest addition. She then invited readers to do the same. So, here they are:

Do you have a favorite pet or pictures online to share? Feel free to leave a comment and a link, so I can see them too. I love animals. They make our lives much brighter!

A Delightful Valentine's Day Surprise

Last night, my husband brought me a funny card and some wall stickers of horses. They're the ones you can remove without damaging the wall. I saw them in the store last week and he noticed, then went out and got them. :) His skills at observation are amazing.

This morning, I woke up and not long after a knock came to my door. When I opened it, a delivery man handed me a long box, smiled and told me to have a nice day. Eager to see what was inside, I immediately opened the box and found these:

There was also a beautiful card with words from my husband's heart that touched me in many ways. It's a card that will be treasured for years to come.

Have you received a special V-day gift this year or any previous year that stands out in your mind? I'd love to hear about it.

My Husband's Debut Novel and Contest

Some of you might have already seen this posted in other places, but I'm doing my hubby a favor and sharing it here as well. :)

For those who don't know, Stuart Vaughn Stockton has sold his first book and it releases on April 1st -- no foolin. :) To help announce and celebrate this auspicious event, he's running a contest (along with sponsorship by authors Brandilyn Collins and Jill Williamson and editor Jeff Gerke). If you're a fan of Brandilyn Collins' Kanner Lake series, you might recall a character named Ted Dawson (or S-Man). Well, that character was based on Stuart, and the novel the character was writing was Starfire. Just as the book was published in the series, the same goes for Stu. An odd and exciting circumstance of fiction meeting reality!

Anyway, all you need to do to become a Herald of the Starfire is:

* post about the contest and Starfire on a blog/website/community page
* download a flyer
* post a banner for the book somewhere online

Then, once you've done any or all of those, send an email to "contest [at] ritersbloc [dot] com" with links to anything you posted online or what you did with the flyer.

Prizes include: The Marcher Lord Press Spring Releases (Starfire, By Darkness Hid, and The Dark Man), the entire Kanner Lake Series by Brandilyn Collins, a guest blogging spot on Brandilyn Collins's blog: Forensics and Faith, and much more!

Visit Stu's web site to find out more: www.ritersbloc.com/contest

Hope to see y'all join in the fun!

Baby Update -- Week 34, 6 Weeks to Go!

Amazing to think we only have 6 weeks to go if the baby cooks that long. For the first yesterday, I'm sure I felt a contraction, although the doctor assures me I've been having them for some time now. I just haven't felt them. Really tight stomach and a rolling sensation across the muscles that I know for certain wasn't the baby. Then, a few moments later, my tummy was soft again. If I'm not touching my belly, though, I don't notice them. Makes me wonder what the labor contractions will feel like---how severe, etc. Guess I'll have to ask Mom what she felt with my older brother. :)

Fatigue is still plaguing me, but is it any wonder, given the physical strain I'm under and the restless nights of frequent bathroom breaks and tossing and turning, while trying to get comfortable. I know I'm supposed to slow down and save up my energy for labor day (and beyond), but there is so much to do, I don't have time to slow down. I also move slower these days, which inhibits what I'd like to be doing, as blood pools in my feet and legs every once in a while, causing a temporary drop in blood pressure when I get up. I've only been dizzy once, so I try to remember to stand slowly.

I had my 33-week appointment last week and the doctor said it's almost like I read a textbook before coming in to see him. LOL! Baby's heartbeat was 155, and I measured at 34 weeks, which is right on target. My blood pressure was 117/78 and looking great. I also lost a pound from the last appointment, so I've only gained 10 pounds overall with this pregnancy. I'm excited! That means when all is said and done, I will weigh less after that post-partum period than what I did when this pregnancy began. Yay!

Can't say the same for the baby, though. Then again, this little one *needs* to gain weight....

Ugh! I'm getting SO fat. I weigh over 5 pounds, measure almost 18 inches and am rapidly running out of room in here. Doesn't stop me from kicking and punching and doing my morning aerobics though. As soon as that thing I think Mommy and Daddy call a dog or Roxie nudges Mommy in the morning, I stretch and go through my morning routine...much to Mommy's dismay. :) My fat is making me rounder and my skin is finally becoming smooth.

I'm also on the move as much as possible, but the big journey ahead of me is changing positions so my head is down and my feet are up. I have no idea how that could possibly be comfortable for the next 5-6 weeks, but something tells me I should make the switch. Upside down doesn't seem logical, but I feel compelled to do it, so I'm starting to make plans to move. Mommy will no doubt appreciate the relief to her ribs, organs and lungs. She might actually be able to breathe again. Oh wait, she lives at over 6,000 feet. Never mind. Forget the breathing. *winks*

Oh, and as I move, Mommy's pelvic muscles are tightening, so they're not as loose as they used to be. She can't do all those spastic dance moves now, for fear that her hips will fall off. :)

In other news, my little liver is almost fully-formed and able to process a certain amount. Actually, most of my physical development is pretty much up to snuff and ready for the outside world. But I'm not sure I'm ready. I mean, I've heard it's cold out there and scary. It's warm and cozy in here and Mommy does a good job making sure I get enough to eat and all of my vitamins. I'm sure she'll do the same once I'm on the outside too. I just don't know how eager I am to make an appearance. Guess we'll play it by ear.

Besides, I still have a few more pounds to gain yet and 42 days to go...

Ok, back to me again. The books tell me that "lightening" will happen this week or next. I honestly haven't felt too much pressure anywhere. We'll see how I feel once the baby drops and shifts to head-down position. Oh, I can just imagine. My poor bladder. And that cute little waddle hubby says I have will only get worse. It's going to feel like I'm carrying a watermelon between my legs. I'm not even in any kind of picnic race either. Of course, there IS a prize at the end, and that's being able to finally hold this little one. So, I'd say it's worth the short-term discomfort.

My next appointment is next week and then I start going every week until the baby is born. Doc will be doing the Group B Strep test at the next one, but my immune system is quite strong, so I'm sure I'll pass. It's the final test before the baby. So exciting!

Other than that, thanks to my mother-in-law and sister-in-law, hubby and I purchased a bargain of a bedset with the Noah's Ark theme that came with a lamp, bookends, nightlight cover, two fitted sheets, bumper, comforter, dust ruffle, window valance, two small pillow cases, diaper stacker and diaper pail skirt. All for just $85! We don't have a window in the baby's area of the office, so we stretched the valance out over the top of the closet. And the comforter is a wall hanging. Take a look at the pictures I've included.

We're almost feeling ready. Just some clothes and diapers I believe. Oh, and a baby monitor along with a handful of other things on our registries. Of course, I don't know how many onesies and sleep-n-plays you should have or even outfits. We only have 5 outfits for when the baby is older/bigger, 2 packs of 0-3 month onesies and 1 pack of 0-3 month sleep-n-plays. The rest are for 3-6 and 6-9 months. I have a feeling we'll be making a run to get clothes not too long after birth. :)

That's about all for today. I have to get ready to head out for our final birthing class tonight. Be back next week with more.

Baby Update -- Week 33, 7 Weeks to Go!

We're into the last full month at week 33. Only 7 more weeks to go, if the baby stays and cooks that long. The doctor told me 37 weeks is considered full-term. Everything after that is fair game. That means, the day after my baby shower, I'll be ready to go any time. Yikes! That's only 4 weeks from today. Amazing how the time has flown. We've been busy, though, preparing. Not much more done to the baby's area, but we've been prepping in other ways.

Let's see. Hubby and I started packing our "goody bag" this weekend with what we could. Some items like an iPod, Nintendo DS game and some food items have to wait until we're closer. But, we have our list checked off and handy, in case someone else ends up finishing it while we're on our way to the hospital.

Same goes with the baby's bag and my own hospital bag. We've started but aren't complete. There are a few items like toiletries and last-minute baby items that we'll add after the baby shower on March 1st, depending upon what we receive that day. Really praying for diapers. LOL!

We collected a list of names for a pediatrician and have to make a few appointments to meet them, see if they gel and feel like they'll work for us. We also made our appointment to pre-register at the hospital. That's next week. Tonight, we'll have our 3rd birthing class, and I've signed up for the breastfeeding and baby care classes as well. Also signed up hubby for the Father-to-Father class. No mothers or women allowed. :) He'll be going with a friend whose wife is also pregnant and due 6 weeks after me.

Hmm, wonder how close our babies will truly be when they make their appearances. With the way my belly is expanding, it feels close. Speaking of which, the little bug inside me wants to say something...

For all the weight and bulk Mommy says she's lugging around these days, you’d think I'd be a super giant or something. But nope. I'm just a little over 5 pounds and about 17 inches long. Not big, I know, but I make up for it in appearance. I'm getting cuter and pudgier every minute as I pile on more of that adorable baby fat. And I'm getting stronger with every passing day.

These days, when I'm not frustrating myself with daily bouts of the hiccups, I've heard Mommy remark that she can see my kicks to her belly. I can't see her smile, but I can hear it in her voice and feel the love in her touch. Once or twice, she's even poked my foot when I've done some stretching. It's fun playing little games with her. I can hardly wait until I can do that face-to-face.

But, you know with each passing week, I'm losing more and more space to move around. That means, I won't be moving as much in the final weeks. For now, though, Mommy and I can have fun. Oh, and Daddy too. I can tell the difference in the hands and the heat from their hands when it's Mommy or Daddy. I might not move much pretty soon, but I'm comfy and cozy and warm and getting ready to make my appearance. Just don't know when that will be....

And now I'm back for a brief spell. It's hard to believe I've made it to under 50 days to go. In some ways, it feels like yesterday. In others, it feels like it's been forever. Sleeping these days is difficult at best, but I know it's preparation for when my little one arrives and I have to be up every few hours for feeding. Good thing I have a comfy rocker and the music channel on TV to soothe me while nursing and spending that precious time with my baby.

Of course, I couldn't dare handle this without the fantastic support of my husband and family. Stu's been fantastic with making sure I'm as comfortable as possible, carrying heavy things for me, helping around the house with cleaning and cooking, and reading books as well as paying attention in the birthing classes to be as informed as possible. It helps me feel more relieved going into this.

That's about all for today. I have to get ready to head out for that class and tour tonight. Be back next week with more.

Baby Update -- Week 32, 8 Weeks to Go!

Here we are at week 32, and if I go to full-term, I've got 8 weeks to go. To accommodate me and my baby's growing needs, my blood volume has increased 40 to 50 percent since I got pregnant. And I'm feeling it mostly in my nose when I sleep as the vessels are ever-expanding. I can only sleep on my right side to keep things clear. With my uterus pushing up near my diaphragm and crowding my stomach, I've noticed more shortness of breath and LOT of heartburn. I've had to sleep propped up with pillows and start eating smaller meals more often.

So far, the lower-back pain hasn't started, but I'm sure it will. However, if it's too bad, I'll call my doctor. I don't want it to be a sign of preterm labor.

My expanding uterus shifts my center of gravity and stretches out and weakens my abdominal muscles, changing my posture and putting a strain on my back. I'm doing my best to keep good posture, though. It's working, as far as I know. Still, there are a lot of hormonal changes that are loosening my joints and the ligaments that attach my pelvic bones to my spine. This is making me feel less stable and once in a while, I have some pain when I walk, stand, sit for long periods, roll over in bed, bend, or lift things.

Other than that, my trips to the bathroom have increased tenfold. Guess this baby is liking my bladder as a footstool or headrest. Since I don't know baby's position, I can't say for certain. I only know my bladder is nearing nonexistent land!

All right, all right. I'll concede the floor to my little angel...

...You know, I'm feeling a whole lot heavier these days. I believe I heard I weigh about 4 pounds and am about 16.8 inches long. That means I'm taking up a lot of space in Mommy's tummy. And it's getting cramped in here. She's gaining about a pound a week and half of that goes right to me. The doctor told her last week that I'm going to gain a third to half of my birth weight during the next 7 weeks as I fatten up for survival outside the womb. Ahhh! The outside. That's a scary thought! So glad to know I'm going to have Mommy and Daddy to comfort me and keep me warm and safe.

Speaking of warmth, I have recently discovered a sensitivity to temperature! And I think Mommy knows it too, because I've kicked her when she's placed her warm hands on her belly or when Daddy's cold hands have touched the skin on the outside.

I have toenails, fingernails, and real hair (all right, so at least it's respectable peach fuzz). My skin is becoming soft and smooth as I plump up in preparation for birth. Oh, and I have blue eyes for now. Don't know if I'll be keeping them. I know Daddy has blue eyes, but Mommy has green. It's anybody's guess at this point.

But it's been a long day, and I'm rather tired, so not much to say this time...

I'm feeling the same as baby right now. But, I do have a treat for you. I've uploaded pictures from my first baby shower along with some shots of what our baby's area looks like right now. The walls aren't done and we're still awaiting a 2nd shower here, but things are shaping up!

Take a look! There should be a full album.

Other than that, I did a little nesting in the kitchen today and picked up a special addition. Look over there to the right to see. :) My brand-new canisters for flour, sugar, tea, whatever. I think I did pretty good with the color blend to the cabinets and countertops. Finally, the cabinets above will be free of half-empty bags and tupperware containers. I have space again!

That's all for now...

Tune in next week for the latest. :) And if you want to receive an email each time I post an update, subscribe using the form over there at the top right. Thanks for coming along this journey with me.
